As a seasoned gamer who grew up with Harry Potter as an integral part of my childhood, I am both excited and apprehensive about the upcoming TV series adaptation. Having followed the saga since its inception, I’ve watched Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson bring these characters to life over two decades, and it’s a daunting thought that new actors will step into their shoes.
Since last year, Warner Bros. has been discussing the possibility of a Harry Potter television series, and now it seems the project is gaining momentum. HBO has recently revealed that they’re starting an open casting call in the UK to find the main characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley.
The network is seeking children aged 9-11, whether they are from the United Kingdom or Ireland, for potential roles. As indicated on the official Wizarding World website and HBO’s flyer, they are dedicated to casting a diverse range of individuals. Therefore, parents or guardians are encouraged to submit performers regardless of their ethnicity, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other factor protected by law.
As the series plans to incorporate all seven original books, the actors chosen for the new versions of Harry, Ron, and Hermione could have the opportunity to develop their roles similarly to how Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson did when they were cast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone over twenty years ago.
A Black actress was cast as the older Hermione in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and the TV show may have the freedom to go even further with diverse casting. But like all things Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views continue to hang over the franchise. Radcliffe, Watson, and other members of the movie cast have spoken out against Rowling’s views, but the author continues to share her opinions despite alienating herself from fans of the franchise.
The Harry Potter television show is anticipated to start production the following year, with its debut slated for HBO and Max in 2026.
