‘Harry Potter’ Star Bonnie Wright Wants Ginny’s ‘Nuanced Moments’ From Books Added in HBO TV Series

As a movie critic who has lived through the magic of the Harry Potter franchise, I can confidently say that Bonnie Wright‘s return to the wizarding world is as exciting as brewing a perfect potion. Her insights into the development of Ginny Weasley’s character and her hopes for the upcoming HBO adaptation are not only heartfelt but also well-informed, given her unique perspective as an actress who grew up with the series.

Actress Bonnie Wright, who portrayed Ginny Weasley in the eight-film series produced by Warner Bros., is set to hand over the role of Sorting Hat to a fresh cast for HBO’s upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s novels. Before she does, however, she shares some ideas on storylines from the books that she hopes will be incorporated into the TV series, particularly focusing on significant interactions between Ginny and her love interest Harry, originally portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe.

Wright shared with EbMaster during the Back to Hogwarts event at New York’s Grand Central Terminal on Sunday that she anticipates exploring the growth of Ginny and Harry’s relationship in greater depth. “Their journey towards love is nuanced, and I believe we’ll see more of that,” she said. “Ginny develops into a reliable ally for Harry, deeply understanding his story and character. She’s an ideal partner for him, and I look forward to witnessing her character’s evolution – as well as many others. If only we could have longer films, there are so many characters with cherished moments from the books, like Neville and Luna. As a fan of the series, I hope to see more of these beloved characters.”

Although Wright doesn’t provide any particular guidance to the potential new cast members that HBO is looking for, as she encourages them to develop their roles independently, she does anticipate a slightly higher level of pressure for the young actors who will portray Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, and other well-known characters.

“During the creation process, we were unaware of where ‘Harry Potter’ would ultimately lead us. Back then, there was no social media and less access to public feedback, making it a somewhat isolated experience. However, I believe this gave those involved an exciting chance to shape their characters and roles as they saw fit. In all honesty, I wouldn’t offer advice because I feel it’s crucial for them to immerse themselves in their own interpretation of the story. From both an actor’s and director’s standpoint, I think it’s essential to make it unique and personal. So, I’m eagerly anticipating this time as a spectator, watching each episode on television every week, and I hope that the performances feel unique, vibrant, and innovative.”

Wright also dismissed the prospect of joining HBO’s “Harry Potter” series set to debut in 2026, either as a different character or a cameo, stating that she finds it exciting that “it will be all new faces,” and she believes it could be confusing if the original cast reappears in another role. In her words, “It would feel strange.” Therefore, she expressed contentment with simply watching from the sidelines.

Instead, Wright is now part of Food Network’s upcoming “Harry Potter”-themed baking contest titled “Wizards of Baking.” The show’s hosts, James and Oliver Phelps (who portrayed Ginny’s twin brothers Fred and George Weasley in the films) will be judging alongside him.

Wright expressed his delight about returning to the “Harry Potter” sets, now used for tours, during filming for a Food Network competition. He found it enjoyable to work in a fresh context, such as hosting a baking show, which he hadn’t anticipated. The creativity shown by the showrunners was captivating, and he appreciated being back with James and Oliver, his on-set brothers who presented the show so engagingly. Wright not only enjoyed judging the contestants and meeting new people, but also cherished the opportunity to reminisce and share more stories from this unique experience on set. He believes fans are eager to revisit these sets.
