‘Harry Potter’ Director Says Kids Casting Search Was Shaped by Macaulay Culkin’s ‘Home Alone’ Stardom and Troubled Family Life: The Parents Are Just as ‘Important’

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for the magic that unfolds on the silver screen, I find myself continually astounded by the tales of those who have graced our screens as children, only to grow into accomplished actors and individuals. Chris Columbus, director of some of my favorite childhood classics like “Home Alone” and the first two “Harry Potter” films, is one such individual whose journey holds a special place in my heart.

Chris Columbus, renowned for directing some of the most memorable child performances in cinema history through films like “Home Alone” and the initial “Harry Potter” installments, shares a key strategy for selecting the right kids: ensuring they have supportive parents. In an interview with Demi Lovato for her Hulu documentary “Child Star” (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Columbus explained that his experience with Macaulay Culkin’s rise to fame following “Home Alone” influenced his casting decisions for “Harry Potter.

Initially, we filmed “Home Alone” without much fanfare, as nobody anticipated Macaulay Culkin’s meteoric rise to stardom. However, within a year, he became a major star, which was quite surprising, Columbus explained. Unlike the “Harry Potter” series, where success was somewhat predictable, this wasn’t the case here. I hail from a working-class background and have witnessed similar situations where children from such families suddenly find themselves as the family’s main source of income after gaining fame.

Columbus acknowledged from the very beginning that his hunt for “Harry Potter” actors was under global scrutiny. He explained, “I had to wear blinders because that’s all I could hear everywhere. Whether you’re on the street, in a bar, or anywhere, people are asking, ‘Who will play Harry Potter? Who will be Harry Potter?’ You bring this kind of information back to the actors and their parents, saying, ‘This is going to get very intense.’

The filmmaker strongly felt it was crucial to ensure that any child actors chosen for the “Harry Potter” series fully understood the commitment involved, given how actors such as Daniel Radcliffe had to agree to appear in several movies simultaneously.

Columbus commented, ‘The remainder of your life will be spent as a child actor.’ That’s what you’ll be known for, and you need to figure out how to cope with that fact,” he added.

It’s worth noting that while making “Home Alone”, Columbus wasn’t privy to the tumultuous household situation Macaulay Culkin was dealing with. In numerous interviews, Culkin has openly discussed the abuse he suffered at his father’s hands, once saying on a podcast: “He was a terrible man. He was abusive, both physically and mentally – I could show you all my scars if I wanted to.” The meteoric fame from “Home Alone” clashed harshly with Culkin’s unstable family life, which prompted Columbus to prioritize finding children for “Harry Potter” who had stable homes as a precaution.

In the documentary, I shared that it struck me abruptly how crucial the role of parents is in this endeavor. I couldn’t risk an actor returning to an unstable home situation for the sake of a movie; it wasn’t worth it. It was just as significant to find suitable parents as it was to find the right children for the cast.

“Child Star” is now streaming on Hulu.
