The Indiana Jones series seemed to finish on a strong note with the 1989 film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. However, Harrison Ford reprised his role as the adventurous archaeologist decades later in The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Dial of Destiny. Although some fans didn’t think these newer movies lived up to the original trilogy – largely because it became harder to believe in the character as he aged – it seems like the story isn’t over yet, according to Kathleen Kennedy.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny came out during a tough year for major summer movies. Films like Warner Bros.’ The Flash, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and Marvel’s The Marvels all disappointed at the box office. Despite positive audience scores (87% on Rotten Tomatoes), Indiana Jones only earned $393 million worldwide, which wasn’t enough considering its estimated $350 million production cost.
Despite Harrison Ford’s recent retirement from the role, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has suggested Indiana Jones may return in some capacity. When asked by Deadline if Ford had continued playing the character for too long, she responded:
I don’t regret making another Indiana Jones film. Harrison Ford really wanted to continue the series and didn’t want it to end with the fourth movie, so we made it happen for him. I believe that was the correct decision, as he was eager to do it. While I don’t think the Indiana Jones story is truly finished, there isn’t much interest in making another film at the moment. However, these are classic movies, and Indiana Jones will always remain popular.
She then surprisingly hinted that the original team might work together again, explaining, “It’s possible. Steven, Frank, Harrison, George, and I are all still available, so we’ll decide if we want to do another project.”

Even dedicated Indiana Jones fans are surprised by the possibility of 83-year-old Harrison Ford returning for another film. Considering there haven’t been any talks about a sixth movie, and it would likely take at least two or three years to make, Ford would be in his late 80s by the time it was released.

Given these circumstances, a new Indiana Jones film starring Harrison Ford seems very improbable. However, the franchise isn’t necessarily over for good. Kathleen Kennedy, when discussing the challenges with Solo: A Star Wars Story and recasting Han Solo with Alden Ehrenreich so quickly after Harrison Ford’s final performance, suggested it might have been a misstep. She believes the movie and Ehrenreich weren’t the issue, but that more time should have passed before introducing a new actor to the role Ford had defined since 1977. This likely explains the long pause we’ll see with Indiana Jones, but doesn’t completely eliminate the possibility of future installments, despite previous statements that no one else would ever take on the iconic role of the adventurous professor.
