Hannah Waddingham has discussed the connection between her characters, Rebecca and Ted, even before the new season of Ted Lasso arrives.
Since it first aired in 2020, Ted Lasso has become a major hit for Apple TV+. The Emmy-winning comedy, created by Jason Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, centers around an American football coach who surprisingly begins coaching a professional soccer team in England, even though he doesn’t know much about the sport. After three successful seasons, Ted Lasso is coming back for a fourth season.
Hannah Waddingham recently shared her thoughts on the relationship between her character, Rebecca, and Ted Lasso in an interview with Variety. She explained that while she believes Rebecca and Ted have a strong emotional connection, it doesn’t have to become romantic. You can read her full comments below.
I really appreciate how this story challenges expectations. The two main characters are definitely meant for each other, though their connection is complex. I also love the dynamics between all the characters.
Though Ted Lasso was the heart of the show, Rebecca Welton quickly became a key character. First presented as the owner of AFC Richmond determined to make the team fail, Rebecca transformed into a fan favorite as her bond with Ted grew and became central to the story.
Hannah Waddingham’s recent comment highlights a major point of discussion following the end of Ted Lasso season three. Many viewers anticipated a romantic connection between Ted and Rebecca as the show neared its conclusion. Instead, the finale saw Ted move back to Kansas to be with his son, and Rebecca begin a new phase of her life in Richmond.
The decision sparked immediate debate among viewers. Some were saddened that the strong connection between the characters didn’t become a love story, while others applauded the show for taking an unexpected path. Many appreciated that Ted and Rebecca’s relationship wasn’t romantic, highlighting how their bond thrived on support, honesty, and helping each other grow as individuals.
Hannah Waddingham recently spoke as anticipation builds for the next season of Ted Lasso. After a long wait, Apple TV+ has confirmed the show will return, with a bigger focus on AFC Richmond’s women’s team. Rebecca Welton is set to remain a central character, so fans can expect to continue seeing the development of her relationship with Ted.
It’s still unknown if season 4 will explore a romantic connection between Ted and Rebecca. The show has always focused more on genuine emotional bonds than typical TV romances, and their friendship is often seen as a great example of this.
I’m so thrilled Ted Lasso is finally coming back after three years! It really became one of Apple TV+’s biggest hits, winning tons of Emmys, and honestly, there’s a little pressure now to live up to everything it’s already achieved. But the buzz is incredible, and it feels like everyone is ready to jump back into the world of AFC Richmond with Ted and the team.
Ted Lasso season 4 premieres August 5th on AppleTV+.
