Although Microsoft‘s Halo TV series didn’t achieve massive popularity, the company is still eager to transform its brands for cinema and television. Upcoming projects include a Minecraft film in theaters on April 4th, followed by Season 2 of the Fallout series on Amazon Prime Video. Moreover, a Gears of War movie and TV show are in the pipeline. Microsoft’s gaming CEO, Phil Spencer, has hinted at further expansions into transmedia possibilities for Xbox franchises.
In an interview with Variety, Spencer explained that not every endeavor will be successful, but each experience contributes to the process of education and growth.
He shared that their past experiences with Halo and Fallout have been invaluable lessons. Consequently, they continue to build upon these foundations. However, he admitted there will be a few misses along the way. To the Xbox community who enjoys their creations, he promised more of such content as they grow increasingly confident and keep learning from their experiences.
In the past, Microsoft established a whole branch dedicated to producing TV series and films named Xbox Entertainment Studios. However, they shut it down in the year 2014.
The Halo TV series on Paramount+ lasted for two seasons before getting axed. The Prime Video Fallout TV series had a successful first season and will return for a second. Regarding the Gears of War movie and TV show, they are currently being made for Netflix, but we’re still in the early stages. A TV show based on Grounded by Obsidian is also being developed.
On April 4th, a film adaptation of Minecraft titled “Minecraft: The Movie” premieres in cinemas. This entertaining production features an ensemble cast that includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Meyers, Sebastian Hansen, and Danielle Brooks. The collaboration for this exciting project comes from both game developer Mojang Studios and movie studio Legendary Pictures.
Mary Parent, serving as global production chief for Legendary, explained that the film will be titled “A Minecraft Movie”, as the game itself lacks a single, definitive narrative. Simultaneously, director Jared Hess (known for Napoleon Dynamite) clarified that this movie isn’t the “canonical” tale of the game, since there’s no established storyline within it.
“We’re not canonizing anything. We’re just one of a zillion stories,” he said.
As a gamer, I can’t help but marvel at the phenomenal success of Minecraft, a game that has sold over 300 million copies worldwide! Now, it seems the upcoming movie is set to join this exclusive club, projected to rake in an impressive $60 million during its opening weekend in the US and Canada. If these predictions hold true, it’ll be on par with the earnings of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – quite a feat for such a unique and engaging game adaptation!
