Halo: Campaign Evolved Revealed

Microsoft launched the Xbox in 2001, introducing the hugely popular game Halo: Combat Evolved. Now, 25 years later in 2026, Halo Studios is reimagining Master Chief’s original adventure with Halo: Campaign Evolved.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a complete remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, rebuilt using the Unreal Engine 5. It’s also the first game released by Halo Studios, formerly known as 343 Industries.

Campaign Evolved isn’t just a refreshed version of Combat Evolved; it marks the first time a Halo game will be available on PlayStation. It’s launching at the same time on Xbox, Steam, and PlayStation 5.

This comes after Xbox President Sarah Bond suggested that focusing solely on console-exclusive games is outdated. Xbox has been gradually releasing games that were once exclusive to its platform on PlayStation 5, like the recent ports of Gears of War: Reloaded and Sea of Thieves.

Remaking Halo: Combat Evolved

For over a year, there have been ongoing rumors that the next major Halo game will be a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved. These rumors started when Halo Studios showcased a recreation of Master Chief wearing his classic Mark V armor during the Project Foundry presentation at the 2024 Halo World Championship.

The rumors turned out to be correct: Halo Studios announced the remake of Halo: Combat Evolved as Halo: Campaign Evolved during the 2025 Halo World Championship.

The Steam page for Campaign Evolved describes it as a rebuilt version of Halo: Combat Evolved‘s story mode, updated for modern players. This confirms earlier reports that the next Halo game won’t include standard player-versus-player multiplayer.

As a big fan, I’m really excited to hear that the new version of the campaign will let up to four players team up online! It’s also cool they’re keeping the classic two-player local co-op, which is a little better than what the original game offered. Being able to play with a friend on the couch is always a plus!

In terms of other new features fans can expect to see in this remake, Campaign Evolved will feature:

  • Three brand-new prequel missions featuring the Master Chief and Sgt. Avery Johnson
  • An expanded arsenal of weapons and vehicles
  • Full crossplay and cross-progression support across all platforms
  • New enemies such as the Flood Tank form which first appeared in Halo 3
  • A fourth seat added to the bumper of the Warthog
  • Dozens of Skulls instead of the mere 14 that appeared in Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
  • Usable Energy Swords, which originally became disabled when Elite Zealots died in CE
  • New Covenant armor designs for Grunts and Elites resembling those seen in Halo Infinite
  • New mechanics and AI behavior

In addition to the new features, Halo Studios worked hard to preserve the heart of Halo: Combat Evolved. They remastered the famous 2001 soundtrack by Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori and brought back the original voice actors – including Steve Downes and Jen Taylor – to both rerecord their classic lines and create new ones.
