Halloween Timelines Explained: Every Version & Canon Status

The Halloween movie series has been restarted several times, often with big changes to the story’s established timeline. The films frequently ignore details from earlier sequels or completely reinvent the narrative, forcing fans and the creators to constantly decide which events are officially part of the story.

The Halloween series actually consists of six separate timelines. These include the classic films from the 1980s and 90s, Rob Zombie’s reimagining of the story, the recent trilogy that picks up four decades after the first movie, and the standalone film Season of the Witch.

The movies all follow established storylines, and those storylines sometimes connect. It can be confusing at first, but once you start noticing the connections, the different timelines become much easier to follow.

The “Original” Timeline

Halloween(1978), Halloween II (1981)

The first two Halloween movies are important because they’ve influenced many later stories in the franchise, but they also stand alone as a complete story. The original 1978 film focuses on Laurie Strode, who is babysitting a young boy named Tommy Doyle, all during a single Halloween night.

After learning that masked killer Michael Myers has killed her friends, she tries to defend herself when he attacks. Her psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis, arrives just in time and shoots Myers six times, but is stunned to find Myers has disappeared after escaping through a window.

In Halloween II, things pick up right after the first movie with Laurie being rushed to the hospital. But the terror doesn’t stop there! It turns out Michael Myers is actually Laurie’s brother, and he’s been relentlessly hunting her ever since he killed her sister, Judith, years before. The movie builds to a really intense showdown where Laurie and Dr. Loomis trap Michael in a room and manage to blow it up, seemingly killing him in a huge explosion of flames. We all thought that was the end of Michael!

The “Silver Shamrock” Timeline

Halloween III: Season of the Witch

After Halloween II, the creators announced they were changing direction. Instead of just continuing the story of Michael Myers, they decided to make each Halloween movie a standalone story. To really drive that point home, this new timeline treats the original Halloween and its sequel as fictional movies within the universe – you even see someone watching the first one on TV! It’s a clever way of resetting things and letting them tell all sorts of different horror stories under the Halloween name.

The central plot of Season of the Witch revolves around a doctor who discovers a nationwide conspiracy. He finds out that Halloween masks made by the Silver Shamrock company have been magically altered using ancient Celtic rituals and a piece of Stonehenge. These masks are designed to transform children’s heads into poisonous creatures, ultimately killing anyone nearby.

He manages to get away from Silver Shamrock, but it’s too late to prevent the disaster. He can only watch in horror as the triggering commercial airs, activating the masks and causing widespread chaos.

The “Cult of Thorn” Timeline

Halloween(1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween 4, Halloween 5, Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers

Many fans of the Halloween series will recognize this storyline. It presents a fresh narrative centered around Michael Myers, detailing his motivations and his deadly pursuit of his family.

I was so shocked when I learned Michael Myers actually survived the explosion at the hospital in Halloween 4! It was awful to find out Laurie had died in a car crash, and even worse that her daughter, Jamie, became Michael’s new target. Jamie was incredibly brave and managed to stop him, but it came at a cost. She developed this strange connection with Michael, a kind of psychic link, that almost made her hurt her foster mom. It was a really intense and scary situation!

In Halloween 5, he starts chasing her again, but she manages to connect with his humanity using her psychic powers, allowing the police to finally arrest him. Later, in Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers, she’s abducted by a strange cult.

The Cult of Thorn, headed by Dr. Wynn from Smith’s Grove Sanitarium, is responsible for Michael’s violent actions. They cursed him, driving him to kill his family. The cult also sexually assaulted Jamie, resulting in a pregnancy, and then forced her to give birth, creating a new victim for Michael.

Her uncle murders her, and her baby is left in the care of Dr. Loomis and Tommy Doyle. While attempting to escape Michael and his followers, Tommy appears to defeat Michael using an unknown substance. Dr. Loomis entrusts the baby to Tommy, but Michael then kills Loomis off-screen, concluding this particular story arc.

The “Sister” Timeline

Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, Halloween: Resurrection

Following the conclusion of the “Cult of Thorn” storyline, the filmmakers chose to restart the series with a new beginning. This time, they brought Jamie Lee Curtis back to center the story around her and Michael Myers.

Halloween H20 disregards the events of the three previous Halloween movies, essentially erasing them from the story. It establishes a new timeline where Jamie’s experiences with the Cult of Thorn never happened. The film reveals that Jamie actually pretended to die and began a new life in California.

Michael finally discovers Laurie’s hiding place and travels to Hillcrest Academy, where she works as the headmaster. After most of the students leave on a field trip, Michael attacks, hunting Laurie and her son, John. Laurie gets John and his girlfriend to safety, then barricades herself inside the school to confront Michael.

After a fierce fight, she defeats him, but doubts he’s truly gone. She steals the ambulance carrying his body and speeds away. In a shocking act, she corners Michael and brutally decapitates him.

Surprisingly, Halloween: Resurrection shows that Laurie didn’t kill Michael Myers after all. Instead, she killed a paramedic who Michael had switched clothes with. Following this, Laurie is institutionalized and waits for Michael to return.

When he arrives, she corners him on the roof. But as she’s verifying his identity, he attacks her, stabbing her and causing her to fall to her death. He then goes back to Haddonfield, where he begins stalking a group of people participating in a reality show who are entering his house, effectively concluding this sequence of events.

The “Rob Zombie” Timeline

Halloween (2007), Halloween II (2009)

Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake of Halloween retells Michael Myers’ story from the start, but with a different take. Instead of portraying Michael as inherently evil, the film suggests his troubled upbringing and abusive home life are what drove him to become a killer. He faces constant mistreatment – from his sister, stepfather, classmates, and his sister’s boyfriend – ultimately leading to the deadly events of Halloween.

After years of being confined, Michael escapes and seeks out his younger sister, Laurie, who was adopted by the Strode family. On the night he returns to Haddonfield, she’s scheduled to babysit, but Michael systematically kills her adoptive parents and friends before finally finding her.

He brought her back to the Myers house and removed his mask, hoping to connect with her as the only person he ever loved. She resisted, and a struggle ensued, ultimately ending when she shot and killed him.

In Halloween II, Laurie Strode struggles with the aftermath of the previous night’s terrifying events, experiencing nightmares and becoming increasingly agitated. Meanwhile, Michael Myers unexpectedly reappears and resumes his killing spree, eventually finding Laurie again. He leads her to a barn, where they become trapped in a standoff with the police. Laurie ultimately defeats Michael, but the film ends with her emotionally broken and institutionalized, suggesting a dark future where she might follow in Michael’s footsteps.

The “40 Years Later” Timeline

Halloween (1978), Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends

This new Halloween trilogy ignores all the sequels and goes back to the very first film. It retcons the established family connection, meaning Laurie Strode is no longer Michael Myers’ sister. The 2018 Halloween film introduces her as someone who’s been living as a hermit, still traumatized by the events of 40 years prior and bracing herself for Michael’s inevitable return.

The day arrives when Michael’s psychiatrist, Dr. Sartain, releases him, hoping to understand the reasons behind his violent urges. Michael immediately begins a new series of murders in Haddonfield. Eventually, Sartain finds him and, realizing Michael isn’t interested in Laurie, drives him to her home, where Michael is ultimately killed.

Michael Myers attacks Laurie Strode, her daughter, and her granddaughter, eventually getting locked in the basement as the house burns. But in Halloween Kills, he manages to escape with the aid of a firefighter and resumes his killing spree.

Driven by Tommy Doyle, the residents of Haddonfield angrily pursue Michael, attempting to kill him themselves. After killing many of them, Michael returns home and tragically kills Laurie’s daughter before vanishing once more.

So, five years after the last film, Halloween Ends picks up with Michael Myers still unaccounted for. But the town’s anger has shifted – they’re now focusing on this guy Corey, who tragically killed a kid back in 2019. He somehow stumbles across Michael, and things go downhill fast. Michael starts to influence him, basically turning him into a copycat killer. Corey even takes the mask and starts his own rampage. It all comes crashing down when Michael finally tracks him down at Laurie’s house.

I was absolutely shocked when Michael finally killed Corey, and then the intense battle with Laurie! I really thought Laurie defeating him was the end, and seeing the town of Haddonfield process and ultimately destroy his body felt so definitive. It seemed like the perfect conclusion to the whole Halloween saga. But honestly? Knowing how often they talk about bringing Michael back, I have a feeling it’s just a matter of time before they create another timeline and he’s back to terrorize us all over again.
