Halle Berry Forced to Change Cannes Dress Amid New Red Carpet Rules, but Says Banning Nudity Is ‘Probably a Good’ Thing

At a recent press conference for the jury at Cannes, Halle Berry shared that she had to quickly adjust her fashion plans because of new rules issued by the festival regarding their famous red carpets. As the 2025 festival approaches, organizers have announced that they will be prohibiting nudity and overly extravagant outfits. Dresses with long trains and other elements that might obstruct the carpet are now forbidden as well.

Berry mentioned that she had a stunning Gupta gown for tonight’s gala, but unfortunately it’s too extravagant with its long train and she can’t wear it due to the dress code. She emphasized her decision not to break the rules, also highlighting the appropriateness of such restrictions in terms of modesty.

On Monday, May 12th, Cannes announced modifications to their red carpet protocols in a statement. These adjustments align with the fundamental structure of the Cannes Film Festival as well as French legislation.

This year, the Cannes Film Festival has formally stated some rules that have been unspoken before. The objective isn’t to control what people wear, but to forbid complete nudity on the red carpet, ensuring compliance with the event’s established norms and French law. These are the latest guidelines from the festival.

Cannes stated they have the ability to refuse entry to people whose clothing might hinder the movement of other guests or create difficulties with seating arrangements within the screening rooms.

This year’s competition jury includes Jeremy Strong, winner of an Emmy for “Succession,” Payal Kapadia, director of “All We Imagine as Light,” South Korean filmmaker Hong Sangsoo, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, Congolese documentarist Dieudo Hamadi, and Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas. Juliette Binoche is leading the jury as its president.
