Hailee Steinfeld’s Hit $252M Remake Of 57-Year-Old John Wayne Western Sets New Streaming Home

A popular movie starring Hailee Steinfeld will be available to stream on a new platform starting tomorrow.

As a movie and TV fan, I’ve always been impressed with Hailee Steinfeld. She’s been in so many things I love – the Pitch Perfect films are hilarious, and I really enjoyed her work in The Edge of Seventeen. Plus, she’s part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and lent her voice to amazing projects like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and, especially, Arcane on Netflix – that show is fantastic! I’m really excited to see her return as Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, and I’ve heard great things about her upcoming Disney movie, Hexed. It’s clear her voice acting is a real strength, and she brings so much to every role.

Beyond that, Hailee Steinfeld proved her skills early on with a fantastic remake of a classic Western, True Grit. Fans can soon re-experience her breakout performance in the 2010 film, directed by the Coen brothers (known for No Country for Old Men). True Grit will be available to stream on Peacock starting June 1st.

The 2010 film True Grit is a reimagining of the classic 1969 movie starring John Wayne. It received 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and recognized the performances of Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, who was just 14 at the time. The film was also a huge commercial success, earning $252 million globally despite a relatively small $38 million budget.

I just finished watching both versions of True Grit, and the story centers around this incredibly determined young woman, Mattie Ross (played by Hailee Steinfeld), who hires a tough, hard-drinking U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to track down the man who murdered her father, Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin). The remake adds another interesting character, a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf, portrayed by Matt Damon, who joins Mattie and Rooster on their journey. You’ll also see Barry Pepper and Domhnall Gleeson in supporting roles.

The 2011 Oscars, famously co-hosted by James Franco and Anne Hathaway, included a nomination for True Grit. While True Grit wasn’t expected to win Best Picture – the main competition was between The King’s Speech and The Social Network (with The King’s Speech ultimately winning) – it was part of a strong lineup that also featured Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, and Toy Story 3.

Hailee Steinfeld has built a successful career with many well-received movies and TV shows, and in 2025, she achieved another major success starring in Ryan Coogler’s Sinners with Michael B. Jordan. The film was a strong contender for Best Picture, competing closely with One Battle After Another. Steinfeld couldn’t attend the awards ceremony – where Jordan and Coogler both won awards – because she was expecting her first child.

If you’d like to see Kim Darby’s performance in the original 1969 film True Grit, it’s currently available for free streaming on Tubi and Pluto TV. And starting June 1, 2026, you’ll be able to watch True Grit on Peacock.
