Hail Macbeth Brings Shakespeare To Video Games With 1990s Spin

In the realm of theater, there’s an age-old belief that Shakespeare’s play Macbeth carries a curse: any group who attempts to stage it will face some form of misfortune during the performance. However, one domain that remains untested is video games – until now. Emerging studio Specto Studio, under the guidance of a former theater director, has unveiled their venture, Hail Macbeth, set for release on consoles and PC.

Title Character Macbeth is a third-person narrative game inspired by Shakespeare’s renowned play. Players will take on the role of an invisible influence, directing Macbeth as he navigates the storyline. The so-called “witches” in this context are integrated within the game’s user interface, offering or concealing information, altering viewpoints, and subtly distorting reality to make players question the boundaries of their control over events.

In contrast to the traditional Macbeth tale, this new adaptation is set within an alternative 1990s backdrop, blending castles, towering corporate buildings, and decaying industrial sites. The dialogue, though, will remain identical to Shakespeare’s original text, while the developers have digitally imported real-world costumes and props to create a more authentic in-game environment.

Specto Studio is headed by Paolo Sacerdoti, a former theater director, who is joined by an accomplished group of veterans from the gaming industry. This team has been involved in creating games such as Detroit: Become Human, Horizon Forbidden West, Hellblade 2, Alan Wake 2, and The Last of Us, which are some of their past projects. In 2018, they developed Roseline, marking the debut of an interactive theater experience in Italy.

Macbeth, set to debut, will be released during Q1 2026 on both consoles and personal computers. Further details about this game are expected within the next few months.
