In a move that can only be described as “let’s throw a party and see who shows up,” the Hashgraph Association and the Exponential Science Foundation have kicked off the Hedera Africa Hackathon 2025. This global extravaganza is set to turbocharge Web3 and artificial intelligence adoption across the vast and vibrant African continent. 🎉
With a jaw-dropping prize pool of $1 million (yes, you read that right), this hackathon will run from August 1 to September 30, aiming to attract over 10,000 participants from 15 African countries. That’s more people than you’d find at a Taylor Swift concert! 🎤
Organized by two nonprofit organizations — the Switzerland-based Hashgraph Association (because who doesn’t love Swiss chocolate and neutrality?) and the tech-savvy Exponential Science Foundation — this event is open to developers, students, and entrepreneurs from every corner of the globe. 🌍
onchain finance and real-world asset (RWA) tokenization; ESG sustainability and traceability; self-sovereign identity (SSI) and AI; and gaming, metaverse, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). If that sounds like a mouthful, it’s because it is! 😅
Up to 15 outstanding teams will receive prizes based on innovation, impact, and alignment with the hackathon’s lofty goals. So, if you’ve got a brilliant idea, now’s the time to dust off that old laptop and get coding!
This Hackathon spans large areas in Africa, with onsite events in over 20 cities such as Lagos, Cairo, Nairobi, Kinshasa, Cape Town, Casablanca, and Tunis. It’s like a tech roadshow, but with fewer clowns and more code! 🤡
Interest in Africa’s Web3 potential is growing faster than a cheetah on roller skates, with more than 50 partners and 100 universities and tech hubs already joining the Hedera Africa Hackathon. Talk about a tech party! 🎊
Africa’s Web3 talents are poised for global impact
a demographic edge and a proven capacity for digital adoption,” said Paolo Tasca, executive chairman of the Exponential Science Foundation. “Yet barriers remain, particularly in foundational infrastructure and education.” So, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but hey, at least they’re trying! 🌈
Governments are also ramping up talent development. Nigeria, for example, recently launched an annual initiative to train 1,000 citizens in artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies. Because who wouldn’t want to be a blockchain wizard? 🧙♂️
