As a dedicated Green Lantern fan for more than 15 years, who was disheartened by Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern film, I’m excited that this DC Comics franchise is getting another opportunity on the big screen through the DC Universe. In April, we’ll witness Guy Gardner with his signature bowl cut in James Gunn’s Superman, and later, we’ll encounter fellow Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Lanterns next year. At the end of March, it was revealed that Nathan Fillion will again portray Guy in the upcoming DC television series, and I find his thoughts on how the character will differ in this show compared to his depiction in Superman intriguing.
In August, lanterns will signal that John Fillion is playing Guy for the third time, in Season 2 of Peacemaker. Joining him are Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn), fellow Justice Gang members. Interestingly, this rendition of Guy will interact with other Green Lanterns for the first time in 2026, as per the actor’s statement to EW regarding this unique dynamic:
“It’s a thrill to finally work alongside the Green Lantern Corps,” Fillion shared. “The dynamics between us are going to be fascinating, especially since my character has been somewhat of a lone wolf up until now.
In Lanterns, I believe he appears somewhat more tense. During our filming, we’ve captured a scene where he exhibits a contented arrogance. It’s intriguing to observe him in diverse settings and witness the impact these varying surroundings have on his character.

A fascinating theory about one of the eeriest Green Lantern villains has been circulating, and I sincerely hope it proves to be valid.
In the same vein as his comic book character, Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner exhibits a bold and overconfident demeanor that often conflicts with the more restrained personalities of Hal Jordan and John Stewart. However, it’s important to note that John Stewart isn’t shy about displaying confidence himself. In the series Lanterns, Kyle Chandler takes on the role of John Stewart while Aaron Pierre portrays Hal Jordan. The story revolves around them investigating a murder in the Midwest, but it remains to be seen how Guy Gardner fits into this mystery. It’s plausible that this will be his initial encounter with John, and potentially one of many encounters with Hal if they have both been part of the Green Lantern Corps for some time.
Fillion spoke on how Guy Gardner’s ego is out of proportion, and just because you have the title ‘Green Lantern’, it doesn’t mean you’re inherently someone to look up to.
The essence of Guy Gardner lies in his unique qualifications for being a Green Lantern – it’s not about being good or pure-hearted; instead, it’s all about courage and determination. And such fearlessness is evident when one considers that Guy Gardner believes he could challenge Superman. However, let me clarify that even though Guy Gardner may hold such thoughts, it’s essential to understand that taking on Superman isn’t feasible for anyone, not even him.
I’m keen on discovering the role Guy Garner will play in the story of Lanterns, given that it primarily focuses on Hal and John. Since he’s supposed to be there to back them up, not overshadow them, it’s intriguing how he fits in. However, with Ulrich Thomsen portraying Sinestro in this Green Lantern TV show, I’d love to witness Guy engaging in some verbal sparring with the former Green Lantern who now yields the power of fear. After all, if there’s someone Guy knows how to irritate, it’s both enemies and allies alike.
As a passionate cinephile, I’m eagerly anticipating the premiere of “Lanterns” on HBO, tentatively scheduled for early 2026. You can catch it not just on TV, but also stream it with your Max subscription. And mark your calendars, because on July 11, Nathan Fillion will breathe life into Guy Gardner for the first time when “Superman” hits the screens.
