Guillermo del Toro’s version of Frankenstein maintains a pattern of high ratings for the famous monster narrative. The upcoming Netflix film, set to release in November, is an interpretation of the original 1818 Gothic horror novel by Mary Shelley, bearing the same title. Notable actors such as Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Charles Dance, Christian Convery, Ralph Ineson, and Christoph Waltz are part of the impressive cast for this Frankenstein adaptation. This is del Toro’s first modern take on a classic Universal monster since his critically acclaimed 2017 film, The Shape of Water, which drew inspiration from 1954’s Creature from the Black Lagoon.
According to FilmRatings.com, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein has been classified as R-rated. This rating trend reflects how contemporary adaptations of Mary Shelley’s original novel have grown increasingly graphic, violent, and mature in the modern era. In contrast, many of the most renowned early adaptations or sequels of this literary masterpiece received either a PG, PG-13, or Approved rating (during the pre-MPA/MPAA period). For instance, the 1931 Boris Karloff film, the 1935 Bride of Frankenstein starring Elsa Lanchester, and the 1957 Curse of Frankenstein featuring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing all fell into these categories.
