Guillermo del Toro has no intention of ever using generative A.I. in his films, and he didn’t have any interest in it to begin with. Speaking with NPR about his upcoming film, Frankenstein, del Toro explained his concern isn’t with artificial intelligence itself, but with human foolishness. He stated he’s 61 years old and hopes to remain uninterested in the technology for the rest of his life. He also noted the irony, as Frankenstein’s monster was, after all, created by humans.
There’s a debate among filmmakers about using artificial intelligence in their work. Some, like the Russo Brothers who used it to alter voices in their film The Electric State, are exploring its potential. Others, like Guillermo del Toro, are strongly opposed – he reportedly said he’d rather stop working than use A.I., even stating, ‘I’d rather die.’ The case of Tilly Norwood, an attempt to introduce an A.I. actress, also highlights the controversy.
