Guillermo Del Toro Reveals Batman Appearance And More New Details About His Justice League Dark Movie, And I Hope James Gunn Revives It

Throughout the 2010s, Warner Bros. explored bringing the Justice League Dark – a team of magical heroes from DC Comics – to the screen, either in a movie or on TV. Guillermo del Toro actually wrote a script for a Justice League Dark film that was once planned as part of the DC Extended Universe. With del Toro recently sharing details about his vision, including how Batman would have been involved, I’m hoping James Gunn will consider bringing this project back to life as part of the new DC Universe movie lineup.

The movie Justice League Dark, briefly known as Dark Universe, was mentioned when Guillermo del Toro discussed his recent film, the critically praised Frankenstein (available on Netflix), on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When the host, Josh Horowitz, asked if Colin Farrell was cast as John Constantine for the DC film, del Toro began by saying:

I hadn’t started casting actors yet. I already had Doug Jones in mind for the role of Deadman, mainly because he had the physical build to wear the suit, and I was familiar with his acting style. I really loved the script – I thought it flowed beautifully and naturally brought all the characters to life.

Casting Doug Jones as Deadman in Justice League Dark was a perfect choice. His tall, slender build is ideal for the ghostly character, and he and the creative team have a history of working together – notably, they previously collaborated on the Hellboy films where Jones played Abe Sapien. Besides Deadman and Constantine, the movie will also feature appearances by Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Black Orchid.

Josh Horowitz then asked the cast who would have been the central character in a Justice League Dark movie, which led Guillermo del Toro to start talking about Batman.

It all clicked when I realized it was Constantine. The story made complete sense, and I especially enjoyed how the characters, including the villain Floronic Man, were interwoven with Swamp Thing, who was surprisingly well-developed. Batman even made a quick appearance – there was a scene where someone needed a plane, and he casually mentioned knowing someone who had one, leading us right into Bruce Wayne’s office. Looking back, I wish I’d been a part of that, but I wouldn’t want to be now.

Although Batman doesn’t typically join the Justice League Dark in comic books—he’s not known for magic or the supernatural—he did team up with them in the animated movies Justice League Dark and Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. It seems his appearance would have been brief, possibly just as Bruce Wayne, while Constantine and the team retrieved the airplane.

Guillermo del Toro explained that his plans for Justice League Dark would have featured Deadman possessing other people, a visual effect he thought would be incredible on screen.

The script was fully developed over a couple of years and wasn’t just a casual idea. We didn’t get to the visual design stage, but it featured some fantastic action sequences. I particularly loved a chase scene where the character, Deadman, would leap from body to body. Imagine an 80-year-old woman in Central Park pursuing the main character, then jumping into a police officer – it was incredibly exciting!

I was really disappointed when Justice League Dark didn’t happen with the old DC Universe, but hearing Guillermo del Toro talk about it has given me hope. I’d love to see James Gunn give that script another look and find a way to make it fit into the new DCU. With James Mangold already making a Swamp Thing movie, it feels like a natural way to introduce those mystical heroes and finally get that team-up going. Even if del Toro isn’t available to direct, I really hope he can still be involved in some way, maybe as a collaborator, like they originally planned when Doug Liman was going to take over.

It might be a long shot, but it would be a real loss if Guillermo del Toro’s Justice League Dark script remained unfinished. Still, I’m staying optimistic. In the meantime, Supergirl is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, with Clayface following on September 11th.
