The Grosse Pointe Garden Society has unveiled the true identity of Quiche, and it’s not going to sit well with fans. In the eleventh episode of Season 1, titled “Monaco Under the Stars,” the mystery surrounding the body from the series premiere is finally resolved. However, instead of providing answers, this revelation only sparks a fresh wave of questions. With only two episodes remaining in the season (and possibly the entire series), the writers have effectively flipped everything on its head.
Titled “Monaco Under the Stars,” the NBC show has been hinting at this gala theme throughout the previous 10 episodes. The majority of the plot unfolds on the day of the event itself, and characters’ comments about the day being great or as bad as it gets seem like the writers subtly nudging viewers. However, when the fourth act arrives, even the most astute fans will be taken aback… in a way they certainly didn’t anticipate.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Confirms Who Died – But It’s Not a Murder
Fans Will Be Surprised by Both the Victim and the Twist
Farewell, Doug’s father, Keith. It is now confirmed in Episode 11 that the corpse the group buried was indeed Keith, who met his untimely end by accidentally impaling himself on garden center tools. The Grosse Pointe Garden Society had begun to mock Keith when he sneaked up on them after the gala, but the staging of that scene made it appear as though he was a bystander, not the victim. However, Episode 11 unveils that what Keith partially observed was actually the group destroying the Grosse Pointe quilt that Patty desired so dearly. In a heroic attempt to rescue the quilt, Keith struggled to pull it out of the wood chipper, but upon freeing it, his backward thrust propelled him onto the gardening tools.
As a movie critic, I must confess that I wasn’t expecting Keith to meet such an untimely end. He wasn’t necessarily the first suspect on my radar, making his demise all the more surprising. However, some devoted fans might lament the relatively minor role Quiche plays in the narrative, especially considering characters like Connor who seem to warrant more screen time.
However, the emotional impact of Keith’s death manages to offset any disappointment arising from Quiche’s limited presence. Throughout the series, it appeared as though this was a tale of revenge, with Quiche being the instigator. But then, an unexpected twist occurs – this is no longer a case of murder, but rather an accidental death. Keith, despite his questionable decisions, was attempting to preserve something that his wife cherished deeply.
This sudden shift in the narrative tone alters the entire dynamics of the series, leaving me eagerly anticipating how the story will unfold from hereon.
Keith’s behavior toward Alice before his passing, such as his harsh words about her not fitting in his family or Grosse Pointe, seems intended to stir emotion from the audience before the accident scene. However, it’s challenging not to empathize with him given that his death was entirely unforeseen. The removal of revenge by the Grosse Pointe Garden Society adds a somber, tragic undertone to what was initially an “eat the rich” dark comedy, transforming its essence.
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Episode 11 Makes One Part of the Show Worse
The Series Can’t Seem to Figure Out Its Romantic Relationships
In an unexpected turn of events, the final episode titled “Monaco Under the Stars” delves into the strains within Keith and Patty’s marriage. Coincidentally, Skip Harding, the man Patty had an affair with, attends the gala. He barely recognizes Patty due to her previous role as his coffee-bringer in the office, and is now married to a younger woman named Brianna. Although it seems out of place, this chance encounter provides an opportunity for Keith to voice his feelings towards Patty, much like he did with Alice in “The Cup.” It appears that this is one of the few relationships that seem to hold significance within this episode.
The Grosse Pointe Garden Society series has derived considerable impact from its romantic entanglements, although they might not be as prevalent as on typical television shows. A crucial aspect of the show is the love triangle involving Alice, Doug, and Brett. However, lately, this aspect has been overshadowed by Brett’s quest to rekindle his relationship with his former spouse, Melissa. In episode 11, the focus on this issue intensifies as Melissa attempts to discuss their past kiss with Brett, and Brett dances with her at a gala in front of Connor. As a result, Connor clashes with Melissa regarding her lingering feelings for Brett.
As the show delves deeper into Melissa’s character, one might wonder which relationship the series intends for viewers to support. Is it a rekindling of Brett and Melissa’s romance, with Connor being written off? Or could it be Brett and Alice, who were initially portrayed as soulmates? Perhaps it is Alice and Doug, if the writers decide to bring Doug back from his stay at the lake house. With the season drawing to a close, it would be beneficial for the writers to provide some clarity on the direction of the relationships rather than constantly switching focus.
Additionally, there’s an ongoing issue involving Birdie, Joel, and Misty that hasn’t been resolved. The altercation between their cars with Misty results in minimal impact, ending with her releasing Birdie from the vehicle. However, it seems that Birdie is reluctant to tell Joel about their unborn child. It appears that this secret will eventually surface in the last two episodes, but the tender emotions shared by Birdie and Joel have largely vanished from the series, leaving only a glimmer of hope – albeit forbidden – due to their strong feelings for each other. On a positive note, it seems that Catherine and Tucker’s marriage is now stable?
Grosse Pointe Garden Society Now Has Even More to Resolve
Will Two Episodes Be Enough for Proper Closure?
The unveiling of Keith as Quiche and his untimely grisly demise raises a host of new queries that the Grosse Pointe Garden Society is running out of time to address. How long will it take Patty to grasp that her spouse has perished? What influence will Keith’s death exert on Doug, potentially impacting the longevity of his marriage with Alice if he remains at the lake house for the next two episodes? Given their behavior, it seems almost customary for the Garden Club to conceal a murder; however, does their conduct appear any less suspicious when considering they might have sought law enforcement (specifically Joel) instead?
The primary concern is whether the creative team aims to wrap up the storylines or if they intend to keep things open-ended in anticipation of a second season. If they choose to leave some plot points unresolved, it could be a strategic move to attract viewers back. However, it’s equally plausible that they will provide closure to this chapter while setting up potential paths for each character moving forward.
The writers have wisely chosen to reveal Quiche’s identity early on instead of saving it as the final “a-ha” moment in the season finale. Now, they must effectively leverage this revelation. Since only three out of four Garden Club members have a minimal connection to Keith, there may not be strong emotional ties to the victim beyond self-preservation. The challenge lies in creating enough emotional investment beyond simple survival instincts.
Instead of being completely unexpected, Keith’s demise is a considerable shock for viewers. It stirs up sorrow and concern about how his passing affects those close to him, which wouldn’t be the case if it were Connor or Gary who had passed away. In episode 11 of Grosse Pointe Garden Society Season 1, they chose an unconventional path, introducing many fresh concepts along the way. However, they must ensure that they can fully explore these ideas before the series ends to keep viewers engaged. This show has gained its reputation as an underestimated treasure due to its character development, and it should continue prioritizing this aspect while maintaining a balance with suspense.
