Earlier this year, Eric Dane, a popular actor known for his roles in shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” or “Euphoria”, left fans saddened when he disclosed that he had been diagnosed with ALS. Asking for privacy to cope with the news alongside his family, he recently provided an update on his health. On Monday, he shared that he remains determined in his battle, but also revealed feelings of anger due to the diagnosis.
Two months following the disclosure of his neurodegenerative disease, Eric Dane appeared on “Good Morning America” with Diane Sawyer. During their conversation, he shared that he has no functionality left in his right arm and anticipates losing control of his left hand within a few more months. His main concern is his lower limbs. Despite his composed demeanor, there were moments when tears welled up as he discussed the aspect of his ALS diagnosis that has him most distressed.
I’m feeling upset due to the fact that my father was separated from me at a young age, and it seems likely that I may be separated from my daughters when they are still young.
Eric Dane experienced the heartbreak of losing his father to suicide at the age of seven, making him acutely aware of the sorrow that comes with such a loss. It’s deeply disheartening to learn that one of his primary worries is inflicting the same pain on his teenage daughters. The actor is married to actress Rebecca Gayheart and they share 15-year-old Billie and 13-year-old Georgia.
A few months past, the family encountered a harrowing incident during their snorkeling trip. As he recounted, he leaped into the sea unaware of his own swimming capabilities. Thankfully, his daughter was there to rescue him and guide him back to the boat. Upon reaching safety, he admitted to breaking down in tears.
Eric Dane expressed that his affection for his daughters has not only deepened his bond with Rebecca Gayheart, but they now communicate daily. Despite filing for divorce from him in 2018, their separation was never finalized. However, she retracted the divorce papers in March, mere weeks before Dane announced his ALS diagnosis. He stated:
As a movie buff, I’ve been fortunate enough to strengthen both my friendships and my parenting skills. She stands by my side as my most ardent advocate and unwavering ally. Whenever I need support, I find solace in her presence.
It’s wonderful that he has such a strong support system at home, which no doubt provides him with the optimism he needs to keep going during these tough times. Indeed, it seems this support has been instrumental in helping him stay resilient and continue fighting.
I strongly believe there’s more to my tale yet to unfold. Deep within, I sense that my journey is far from over. I’m doing everything in my power to keep going. There are many factors beyond my grasp that influence this situation.
Regardless of the daily struggles he encounters, Eric Dane expressed his desire to spend time with his family while still managing to work if possible. Following his April diagnosis, he mentioned his plans to resume filming for Euphoria Season 3. Moreover, his upcoming show, Countdown, is set to air on TV schedules in June 2025.
In the coming months, you’ll have the opportunity to watch a gripping crime drama, filmed earlier this year and streamable on Amazon Prime Video. This captivating series features Jensen Ackles portraying LAPD detective Mark Meachum, who becomes part of an investigative team tasked with solving the murder of a Homeland Security agent.
Though it’s been thirteen years since Eric Dane played Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy consistently, his character remains a beloved figure among fans. In fact, the hospital in the show is named Grey Sloan Memorial, which reflects his enduring popularity. The characters of Mark Sloan and Lexie Grey made a surprising return in 2021 after their tragic deaths in Season 8’s plane crash, but even without regular appearances, Eric Dane continues to captivate fans.
You can rewatch all the episodes featuring Eric Dane, who is famously known as “McSteamy”, from the show “Grey’s Anatomy”. To do so, you’ll need a subscription to either Hulu or Netflix.
In the meantime we’re wishing for the best for Eric Dane and his family during this time.
