Grey’s Anatomy Star Reveals He Quit Coffee To Master Medical Jargon

For several more months, “Grey’s Anatomy” will remain absent from the 2025 TV lineup, but don’t worry, we’ll soon find out who (if anyone) met a tragic end in the thrilling Season 21 finale. The cast won’t be idle for long, though; they’ll be back to work on Season 22 soon enough, and it seems Scott Speedman has already made a change โ€“ he’s switching to decaf. Intriguingly, the actor has shared why he had to give up coffee altogether in order to continue with “Grey’s Anatomy”, and believe it or not, his reason is actually logical.

In the eighteenth season of Grey’s Anatomy, Scott Speedman returned to the show, taking up the character of Dr. Nick Marsh once more. He had initially appeared in a single episode during Season 14. Mastering the complex medical jargon used in the series can be challenging for some actors, but it appears that Speedman finds it enjoyable, as he mentioned in Variety’s Actors on Actors interview series.

The medical-speak, for me, is great. Itโ€™s really fun. But I had to quit coffee to do it.

It’s not hard to understand why the main cast members of “Grey’s Anatomy” might struggle when they need to discuss some of the incredibly complex and unusual medical cases depicted in the series (or even everyday procedures like appendectomies and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts). However, it seems that Scott Speedman manages well, provided he maintains a low resting heart rate. He went on to say:

If I consume too much caffeine, I find it difficult to engage in a conversation smoothly. The intricate blending of dialogue with props is something I picked up from [Grey’s]. They are incredibly dedicated to their surgical work. It’s amazing how the hospital can be destroyed, yet patients can survive, but during surgery, even a slight error with a scalpel can have severe consequences. There’s a nurse I adore on the show โ€” Linda โ€” who has been there for ages and watches over everything. She’s an old-school disciplinarian and isn’t afraid to scold you when needed, though in the best possible way. I find it endearing.

1. Consuming excessive caffeine makes me struggle with maintaining a natural dialogue flow. From [Grey’s], I’ve learned the importance of coordinating dialogue with props and their dedication to surgery is remarkable. It’s astounding that a hospital can withstand destruction, yet patients can still survive, but in the operating room, even a minor mistake with a scalpel can be disastrous. There’s a nurse on the show named Linda who I adore โ€” she’s been there for ages and oversees everything. She’s an old-school disciplinarian who won’t hesitate to correct you firmly, although it’s done in the most endearing way possible.

In a roundabout manner, let me acknowledge the Season 21 finale’s cliffhanger involving Chris Carmack’s Link and Nurse Linda without revealing any spoilers, and instead focus on my admiration for Scott Speedman’s approach to working without caffeine.

I hadn’t expect a simple cup of coffee to matter much, but it seems that being slightly less energetic could assist him in adjusting better to the abundance of medical terms. Otherwise, he might incur the displeasure of Nurse Linda.

I’m thoroughly captivated by the fascinating detail regarding Linda Klein, who’s both a longtime producer and surgical consultant. Given the nature of this show, where actors undergo real-surgery preparations and dedicate two days to film just 30 seconds of surgery, it doesn’t come as a shock that she has such an impressive background.

It has been officially announced that Ellen Pompeo will reprise her role as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy for Season 22, and it’s safe to assume that her boyfriend Nick Marsh will also be present. The character played by Scott Speedman is tasked with stepping into the shoes of Derek Shepherd, who was Meredith’s love interest. Managing such a role might seem easier than dealing with medical terminology, even when it’s caffeinated!

As of now, we don’t know when the new season of Grey’s Anatomy will start, but it’s expected to air every Thursday during the fall on ABC. If you have a Hulu subscription, you can watch it the following day.
