Frankly speaking, after all the unexpected twists and turns on Grey’s Anatomy, I wouldn’t be surprised if a dragon flew through the hospital. Remember, it was here where Kyle Chandler was blown up in the hallway following Meredith Grey’s successful bomb removal from a patient. It’s also the show that ran George O’Malley over with a bus and dragged him for blocks. Not to mention, Lexie Grey and Mark Sloan met their end in a plane crash, while Andrew DeLuca was stabbed by a human trafficker. You’d think Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital would be uninsurable due to the frequency of shocking deaths. However, this finale managed to catch me off guard – it really took my breath away.
On this particular occasion, I find myself inclined to rush towards the conclusion, but let’s take a brief pause for some patience as we establish the context. We’re at the end of the internship’s first year, and much like in ‘Grey’s’, multiple romances are unfolding simultaneously. However, only a few seem destined for longevity. Among those, Jo and Link belong to the durable pair. They’ve just tied the knot, he serenaded her at their wedding, and they’re on the brink of having twins. Aren’t they adorable! Simone and Lucas fall into the uncertain category. They share undeniable chemistry, but their communication often seems to lack consistency.
Among those with slim chances (hopefully), there’s this year’s intern-doctor partnership, Ndugu and Millin, as well as Teddy and Owen – who briefly experimented with an open marriage during this season, but things quickly fell apart. Since this is the finale, we finally learn something about the outcomes of these relationships, although in one instance, it could lead to a devastating end.
Recall the neuro patient named Dylan? Known for being daring, charming, and smart beyond her years? Unfortunately, she remains in a coma, leaving her mother Jenna heartbroken. In fact, Jenna’s despair has led her to an alarming act – she kidnaps Amelia and Simone by threatening to detonate a canister of explosive gas she stole from her husband’s workplace at the hospital. Oh my, what a shock.
In this scenario, it could be rephrased as: Amelia maintains that surgeons can’t perform optimally unless they have the right tools and aren’t under pressure. However, Jenna isn’t in a position to accept such arguments right now; she just wants to hear “Your daughter is okay!” Instead, Amelia finds herself needing to pull off another miracle, as the hospital is on the verge of an explosion if something isn’t done. Eventually, Beltran notices the commotion and alerts Webber, who then contacts emergency services (911).
Right around the corner, I find myself grappling with similar emotions as Teddy. Just days ago, she devised an innovative operation to save Nora, Owen’s childhood friend who was critically ill. It was a heart-wrenching sight to see them together in her hospital bed last week. Understandably, this wasn’t the best scenario when their marriage is precariously balanced. But let’s face it, Owen’s just being Owen.
And
As the entire floor empties due to the hostage-and-bomb predicament, Teddy, Ndugu, and their aiding interns Millin and Kwan persist with their work. In reality, such behavior might seem incredibly chaotic, but in the world of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, even situations like these don’t deter dedicated surgeons from focusing on their tasks.
In the midst of everything, Jo and Link were oblivious to the hostage crisis as they were deeply engrossed in their pre-honeymoon activities. Fortunately for them, no one held their brief distraction against them since everyone was focused on the alleged gas tank issue (or whatever you’d call it). Amidst the chaos, Jo shared with Link that their upcoming twins are girls, which filled him with joy to become a “girl dad”. This bit of happiness was short-lived as events took a turn for the worse shortly after.
The situation inside is becoming increasingly tense, minute by minute. Dylan requires FFP urgently to control the bleeding, but it’s not available. Voices are raised, and Simone unsuccessfully attempts to calm Jenna while Lucas rushes towards the agitated mother brandishing a scalpel. Fortunately, their rescue arrives at the crucial moment. By the way, Meredith has returned to Grey Sloan for a visit, perfect timing!
Meredith hastily rushes upstairs carrying a bag, following the same labs that instruct Amelia about needing FFP. She finds everyone prepared for a fight, resembling a cage match scenario. Dylan stabilizes, and the surgeons confirm to his mother, who’s weeping, that it’s all resolved. Jenna accidentally drops an empty gas tank, causing panic until she clarifies this. Simone, who’s been tightly held by Jenna throughout, is enraged and almost speechless. The police intervene and arrest Jenna. After ensuring Simone and Adams’ safety, they quickly shift their focus to what matters: passionately kissing as if there’s no tomorrow. Despite their differences about the future, in this instant, they recognize their deep desire for each other.
It seems there’s a bit of a complication regarding Simone’s love life. The guy she started seeing at Joe’s last week, right after her breakup with Lucas, turns out to be an intern at Grey Sloan next year. Whoops! A lesson learned from watching this show for some time: If you bring home someone you met at Joe’s, there’s a strong possibility they could end up working alongside you the following day. This is something Meredith can attest to, as it seems Simone is following in her footsteps when it comes to romantic entanglements.
As a dedicated movie-goer, let me share some insights about Millin and Ndugu’s developing situation in our favorite show. You won’t believe it, but there’s been some progress! My intuition about his feelings for her was spot on – he seems to be smitten, yet she doesn’t reciprocate. Imagine her surprise when she discovered that he had cut her off professionally due to confusing emotions on his part. Needless to say, she’s quite upset about potentially losing out on prospects because of his sentimental entanglements. The upcoming season holds a mystery as to where this will lead, but I can sense there are more twists ahead in their storyline.
The fantastic news is that Nora’s operation was a success! Here’s another piece of delightful information: When Owen eventually confesses his love for her, reveals their marriage, and promises to be exclusive with her, she delivers the perfect break-up line: “I’m choosing myself.” OMG!!!
At last! Teddy and Owen, now separated by a divorce. While we could go on about the specifics of Teddy’s parting words, where she expresses her exclusive affection for him since their first encounter, we should mention that her relationship with Koracick does cast some doubt on this claim. However, I couldn’t care less about such details in this instance. What truly matters is that they are no longer together. Let’s move forward and contact Cass Beckman to finally enjoy that spa day she promised. I can’t help but feel a bit of sympathy for Owen, but it won’t take him long to find another life to disrupt – at least now it won’t be Teddy’s anymore.
If you find this situation a bit too cheerful, it might be due to the heart-wrenching twist at the end of the week’s events. Just as everything seemed resolved, Jenna’s husband disclosed that the gas tank she was accused of stealing was actually full. By chance, did she ever open the valve? Oh dear, I hope not.
Friends, those were my precise words. As Lucas darted through the corridor, I let out a shout. And upon spotting Link with the cauterizing device, I found myself bursting into laughter, a mix of astonishment and despair. Frankly speaking, it’s hard to believe. I’m half-hoping this is some sort of trick, yet I can hardly fathom how Link manages to survive, given the massive explosion we witnessed from afar. If Link indeed perished, it would be one of the most heartless actions this series has taken in years – perhaps since DeLuca. Jo would have gone from enduring an abusive spouse, to a husband who abandoned her for his ex-lover, only to lose her college confidante within the same week. Truly, she seems to be under a romantic hex of some sort.
For even the Grey race, this situation seems incredibly distressing. A tiny part of me thinks Link may escape unscathed while another soul meets a tragic end, but I can’t fathom who or how. I’m only making an educated guess, but I believe you’re well aware of whom my support lies with.
The OR Board
I’m thrilled to learn that Meredith’s Alzheimer’s research is progressing smoothly, and it makes me even happier to know she’ll resume surgeries at Grey Sloan in the summer. This benefits Meredith, boosts the hospital’s reputation, and (fingers crossed) gives us more of Ellen Pompeo – a situation that’s nothing short of a win-win-win!
– I didn’t bring up Ben’s situation earlier since my feelings towards him cooled down several seasons ago, but it appears he won’t keep his job at Grey Sloan. Teddy seems unwilling to suggest him for a permanent position because, as it turns out, displeasing the boss can indeed lead to repercussions. Isn’t that fascinating! Let’s see if Bailey intervenes, but I’m hoping she doesn’t.
How would we describe Simone’s new acquaintance thus far? While he’s undeniably handsome, his vibe seems reminiscent of early-season Karev, which could potentially be off-putting. I have a feeling Lucas might not take kindly to him.
