Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Forget Me Not

Let me put it plainly: I’m stating the truth here: It’s a relief! It’s a relief Cass Beckman has an odd tendency to linger in hospitals where she doesn’t work. Thankfully, she has a peculiar fondness for creating PowerPoints, and heaven knows that some mischievous college students caused Teddy Altman quite the ruckus on her way to work this week. I had held onto hope that Teddy might develop a relationship with Sophia Bush, who joined the series as a trauma surgeon from another hospital earlier in the season – and whose open marriage could have potentially opened new avenues for Grey’s Anatomy‘s most static couple. (Apologies.) Now, it seems we’re heading straight towards that very scenario.

While her husband was having a colonoscopy, Cass stayed behind and this provided an ideal moment for her to make Teddy ponder the boundaries of their relationship. There’s a noticeable chemistry between them, and it isn’t only due to Cass offering to help with Teddy’s workload. Teddy appears more carefree and unburdened in Cass’ presence — supported. Perhaps it’s because Cass is the one who seems to understand how tired she feels. Meanwhile, Owen seems preoccupied with thoughts of his old friend, Nora.

Instead of just disliking Teddy and Owen Hunt together, as someone who’s extremely fond of Owen yet critical to a fault, I’ve yearned for this series to delve into more intricate relationship dynamics – something fresh and captivating that breaks free from the traditional, two-person relationships that most couples on this show have been stuck in. Recall the deeply layered and complex entanglement that was Lexie Grey, Mark Sloan, Callie Torres, and Arizona Robbins? I’ve longed for a similar level of complexity, but with less bias towards bi-phobia. And it seems like this could be on the horizon now.

From my perspective as an ardent viewer, the plot twists seem somewhat contrived at times, but frankly, it doesn’t diminish my enjoyment one bit. It certainly seems unexpected when Nora, Owen’s friend, appears almost out of thin air, doesn’t it? Their apparent lack of chemistry is palpable, even after she attempted to kiss him. The narrative indeed seems crafted to lead us towards the heartfelt confession in this week’s parking lot conversation, where both Owen and Teddy admitted their love for each other, yet their eyes are drawn elsewhere. If this intricate storyline eventually shatters the barriers of their marriage and sets Teddy free, I’d gladly rewatch every moment of it a thousand times over.

It’s possible that the forthcoming conversation might result in a separation, but it doesn’t seem like they’re moving towards that just yet – at least not immediately. As for Owen and Teddy, I’m skeptical about his willingness to pursue an open marriage with Nora while also spending time on romantic spa retreats with Cass. However, I’m optimistic! Perhaps they’ll split up or maybe they’ll end the monotonous state of their marriage, but regardless, I’m rooting for them either way – whether it leads to a breakup or an improvement in their relationship dynamics.

Essentially, this week’s storyline centered around preserving profound, shaping love. The narrative progressed Teddy and Owen’s long-term romance, while the Alzheimer’s predicament from last week deepened as Evan Moore (played by Lena Waithe), a former protege of Catherine Fox, tirelessly worked to prevent Tasha from losing the donated liver she acquired through deceit. This situation inadvertently created a rift between Meredith and Nick, a development that, in retrospect, may not have been so surprising given Meredith’s tendency, in such situations, to make a choice that stirs up controversy.

To put it in my own words, I get why Evan was upset with Meredith; no one wants to learn that a group of bureaucrats might decide the fate of their loved ones. However, it took me a while to grasp Nick’s anger as well. It seemed he feared Meredith could find herself in Tasha’s position someday, forcing him into Evan’s shoes. Yet, this doesn’t alter the medical protocol that Meredith was only trying to uphold amidst all the intense emotions stirred by this situation. Meredith didn’t openly display those feelings, but they were clearly bubbling under the surface. After all, we’re talking about Meredith Grey , who knows how to keep a cool facade even in challenging times.

Ultimately, what truly mattered was they reached an agreement, and Meredith made a heartfelt revelation: “I can’t picture my life without you.” This moment left me breathless as I exclaimed, “Oh my goodness, it was just so touching!

Furthermore, given that Nick is a genius transplant surgeon specializing in McGenius, he devised a creative solution for our predicament: dividing the liver into two portions and donating it to two recipients – Tasha and Lisa, a librarian. Much like Devin from season eight of Love Is Blind, Lisa has developed an excessive reliance on ibuprofen.

In a somewhat less captivating scenario, Lisa’s case may not have been particularly engaging, but it certainly brought out an enormous ego trip from Ben Warren. You might be surprised to hear that his evaluation from Altman wasn’t exactly positive. The issue for Ben is that his wife is also his superior, and as Miranda Bailey detests poor reviews, she scrutinized him closely for any signs of disobedience. In the end, when she brought up the review and reminded her husband to stay within his probationary bounds, he responded in a manner typical of Ben. He’s not just a young resident with floppy ears, he argued. He possesses knowledge! And experience! With this understanding, he declared, “I will do what is best, and I hope my boss can recognize it.

Apologies, but such behavior is quite extraordinary, no matter how skilled this individual may be. Every organization has a hierarchy, and it serves a purpose, particularly in hospitals. Notably, Ben is currently going through a probationary period, so his actions should be carefully scrutinized. As Sydney Heron pointed out, there seems to be a strong influence of nepotism at play here.

Once more, it’s clear that at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, people often believe they are exempt from the usual regulations. Take Blue and Lucas, for instance, who secretly brought in Molly, Blue’s former partner, for a quick EEG following her seizure. When Amelia discovered them, she couldn’t resist peeking at the test results and diagnosed Molly with temporal lobe epilepsy. Given that Molly wasn’t keen on undergoing additional brain surgery due to the risk of losing more memories, Blue was determined to build a new life with her and didn’t want to listen. In the end, they settled on a solution: Molly will have the surgery if Amelia agrees to perform an experimental procedure aimed at restoring her memory. We’ll find out next week whether Amelia accepts this proposition, but considering her penchant for taking on challenging operations, it seems likely that she will.

The OR Board

In another development this week, our patient Cameron found himself somewhat underwhelmed. The scavenger hunt subplot was entertaining, and the scene where he got pinned to the MRI machine with a metal pole was amusing, but overall, I felt that the love triangle could have been more convincing. It seemed as if it were just going through the motions, much like Teddy and Owen’s marriage.

Even though those college antics might have caused Jules some distress following Mika, it’s heartening to see they spurred her to move past her sadness. Instead of wallowing in melancholy, she could head over to Joe’s and potentially meet someone fresh. To top it off, she managed to impress everyone by solving the final puzzle on her exit – a feat nearly as thrilling as an exciting encounter.

To put it simply, considering the characters we know, how likely do you think it is for Owen and Teddy to opt for an open marriage, and if they do, would they manage to stay together? Given our understanding of them, I’d estimate the probability as 70% for the former and 0% for the latter.
