Speaking as a movie enthusiast, the quote from “The Devil Wears Prada” by Stanley Tucci to Anne Hathaway resonates deeply with me, especially when it comes to Grey’s Anatomy. If someone at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital seems to have everything they ever wanted, beware! Chances are, something else in their life is about to take a tumble and leave them reeling. This week, poor Lucas found himself on the receiving end of this ominous prophecy.
Recently, I’ve been empathizing with Adams quite a bit. Each time one of his classmates celebrates a fresh surgical success, he is reminded that he will be repeating the year while they move forward. It seems unfair, doesn’t it? This is due to an incident where a patient passed away on his watch after he breached rules and performed a procedure without supervision because his attending had collapsed. Recall Izzy’s mistake with the LVAD wire and stealing a heart that led to Denny Duquette’s demise? Let’s show some leniency!
After several weeks of moping around the hospital and pleading with anyone who would listen, mainly Richard, to assist in persuading Catherine to undo his treatment, Lucas had some good fortune this week. Although Richard may have backed out of discussing the matter with Catherine due to concern about making things more complicated, he managed to arrange it so that Lucas was assigned to Catherine’s team for the day. Since it would be better for someone else not to tell Catherine how skilled a surgeon Lucas is, but rather for him to demonstrate it himself, this seemed like a wise move.
It seems there’s an issue: Catherine appears to be occupied at the moment. She’s preoccupied with dealing with insurance companies, managing patients, and apparently, speaking to high-ranking officials such as the POTUS, which I imagine would be quite a spectacle. However, it appears that Catherine is too swamped to pay attention to Lucas’s eagerness to demonstrate his expertise. This becomes particularly evident during their treatment of Navy, a patient with a unique case of transverse vaginal septum causing excessive bleeding during periods she was unaware of. In these situations, Catherine dismisses Lucas’s attempts to impress her with her signature calm demeanor and piercing gaze. Instead, she advises Lucas that the only way to gain her respect is by discovering a surgical procedure, one that, according to their current knowledge, does not exist – a more modern alternative to the current option available in the United States medical system (a common trait, it seems, of both Catherine and the U.S. healthcare system).
In this cinematic tale, poor old Navy finds herself in a bit of a pickle. Not only is she grappling with a charming surgical resident discussing her internal anatomy, but to make matters worse, her best friend is flirting with the very same guy she has feelings for. It’s safe to say that their friendship might not survive this storm, though Navy is currently too preoccupied with Lucas potentially operating on her innards to notice.
In a twist of events, it turns out that Lucas did indeed discover an extraordinary medical protocol from Down Under. However, when Navy shows signs of discomfort at the thought of him performing the procedure, he displays admirable restraint by inventing an urgent operation and stepping aside to respect her modesty. While his grandstanding might not have won Catherine’s approval, it certainly saves the day in this instance.
It seems that this news is fantastic indeed! Adams will no longer be segregated from his class, enabling him and his partner Simone to progress jointly in their careers simultaneously. Given her recent requests for him to rejoin the intern fraternity house, it appears the timing couldn’t be more perfect, doesn’t it? Absolutely!
It’s interesting to note that while Simone has taken over Meredith’s role at work due to her surgical skills and family connections, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Like Meredith, Simone also struggles with commitment. So, when Lucas gets carried away talking about their future plans and making advance arrangements, Simone, visibly tense only to us, decides to slow down the moving-in process. Instead, she invites Lucas for a dinner date at Joe’s. Being overly excited about his recent success, Lucas seems oblivious to this, so it seems like this issue might escalate in the coming weeks. But until then, a sigh of anticipation and apprehension.
Instead of focusing on them and their unsteady bond, let’s shift our attention to another intriguing situation: Jules and her mentor, Winston, up on the roof. Webber, with his keen eyesight, seemed to pick up on something between them when they returned. And as a responsible supervisor, he subtly conveyed a warning to Winston about it.
Is it possible that we are moving towards an intern/attending dynamic again between Jules and Winston? Last year, some of us had a feeling this might happen when Jules became starstruck over the cardio attendings, and later criticized Winston for being dismissive about professional cuddlers. While I couldn’t tell if that was where things were headed when I saw them on the roof, it seemed like one of those situations where she was admiring the view while he was looking at her. This suggests that Winston might have feelings for Jules that she may not reciprocate. Personally, I would prefer to see him date the woman with pugs that Webber tried to set him up with earlier, as she wouldn’t be a colleague.
It appears we should delve deeper into the patients’ stories, yet I must confess, they seemed rather uneventful – quite an achievement given one was a window cleaner who unexpectedly shattered through a window. However, there was no suspense in these tales, hardly any sense of peril. The wife of the window cleaner looked terrified, and Jules showed concern during Winston’s heart-pumping routine, but overall, the emotional impact of the surgeries was minimal. Our other patients, besides Navy, were a boy who needed to pass wind urgently and his mother, who got hurt when the cleaning rig broke through the window. In both instances, there wasn’t a strong feeling that either was in any real danger. Instead, they seemed more like filler characters to fuel discussions among doctors. Given this is a hospital drama, such character development is expected to some extent. Yet, overall, they failed to stir any emotions within me.
To put it simply, this episode seemed rather low on tension. The ongoing spat between Lucas and Simone didn’t feel particularly significant, and I’m keeping my thoughts about Winston and Jules for when their relationship becomes more defined. Additionally, Simone and Blue had a dispute over roommate matters that was settled by the episode’s end. Ben Warren found himself struggling to find friends in his class, so he chose to team up with Taryn, who is now burdened with more work following Levi’s departure for Texas. Together, they pretended to be superheroes and attempted to help Fareed pass gas around the hospital, which was adorable but quickly faded from memory.
While not every installment can be spectacular, this particular one seemed out of tune. The various plot elements didn’t seem to connect smoothly, and aside from Lucas’s well-deserved sense of relief, it was challenging to become emotionally involved. Let’s hope that this is just a temporary issue while the show readjusts its narrative flow. By the way…
The OR Board
It’s delightful to imagine Jules mastering the carillon high up in the bell tower as a college arts assignment. The scenery must have captivated her, and I can only speculate that she found more than just music within those walls!
Blue’s action of allowing his med-school roommate’s cousin’s boyfriend to stay unannounced at the intern frat house is appalling, but it’s a scenario that many people who have shared apartments with strangers in New York might find familiar. (I often console myself with this thought as I reflect on the year I lived with not just one, but two roommates who rented out their rooms to different European tourists through Airbnb for months at a time!)
It’s clear that Ben wasn’t intending any wrongdoing, but using a date night as a trick to persuade your wife to assist with studying for exams seems like it should be punishable by law. Leave Bailey alone to enjoy her takeout meal!
