‘Gremlins’ Meets ‘Hot Fuzz’: ‘Gnomes’ Horror-Comedy Series Lands at Stan, ZDFneo

The Los Angeles-based studio, Happy Accidents, has teamed up with Australian production houses Total Fiction and Screen Invaders for the creation of a unique blend of drama and comedy titled “Gnomes” (six episodes, each lasting 30 minutes).

I’m thrilled to be on board as a co-producer and international distributor for this remarkable series, produced by a studio renowned for creating top-tier content spanning various genres such as films, scripted and unscripted series, documentaries, and formats. This project has been greenlit by Stan Australia and acquired by German broadcaster ZDFneo through Network Movie. I can’t wait to see it unfold!

The series portrays two police officers in a quaint little town, who find themselves in a fight against an army of lethal garden gnomes that mysteriously come alive during their first-ever Gnome-a-Palooza festival. To make these tiny troublemakers seem real, the show will blend practical effects and visual effects technology.

Renowned filmmaker Joel Kohn, leading Screen Invaders, is the brainchild behind this series and will be involved in its production alongside John Molloy, known for “Barons” and “The Gloaming,” and Richard Kelly, recognized for “The Tailings” and “Jones Family Christmas.” Holly A. Hines, from Happy Accidents, famous for “Ginny & Georgia” and “Fortitude,” along with Eric Jarboe, who has worked on “Falling for Christmas” and “The Princess Switch,” will also serve as executive producers.

Australian humorists Tegan Higginbotham and Paul Verhoeven are crafting the screenplays, while Matthias Hoene, known for directing “Theodosia” and “Cockneys vs Zombies,” is set to take on the initial direction of the project.

Hines, who is also a Co-CEO at Happy Accidents, expresses his enthusiasm by saying, ‘I was smitten with this idea as soon as I listened to the pitch. The scripts have been nothing short of extraordinary.’ He goes on to describe ‘Gnomes’ as an exceptional gem, full of wild imagination and quirky humor, unlike any other comedy-drama currently available.

Jarboe, Co-CEO of Happy Accidents, remarks that the excitement shown by our partners at Stan Australia and ZDFneo underscores just how universally appealing this adventure is. We’re thrilled to share this one-of-a-kind journey with audiences.

Last year’s Content London Drama Pitch Contest saw the series cause quite a stir, securing the runner-up position against a global pool of more than 200 submitted projects.

2025 will see the kickoff of our first project down under with Total Fiction, a new Australian production house established in 2024. This will also be Screen Invaders’ premiere television series.
