As a devoted admirer, I’m sad to share the news that Greg Cannom, a brilliant makeup and prosthetics artist whose Academy Award-winning transformations graced films like “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” “Vice,” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” has passed away at the age of 73.

I’ve just learned about the unfortunate demise of one of the remarkable makeup artists, Greg Cannom. This is the man who began his career with me in the 70s, starting from the sequel to ‘It’s Alive’. Not only did he help me create the baby for that film, but he also portrayed one of the monster babies himself. When I left my initial garage workshop, Greg took over the space. And when I needed a larger industrial unit, Greg handled that too. His work will live on long after his passing. This is truly sad news. Rest in peace, Greg, your talent and contributions will be deeply missed.

Cannom had been nominated six times for the Best Makeup award at the Academy Awards, although he won four of these nominations. His Oscar nods came for “Hook” (1992), “Hoffa” (1993), “Roommates” (1996), “Titanic” (1998), “Bicentennial Man” (2000) and “A Beautiful Mind” (2002). Additionally, Cannom and Wesley Wofford jointly received an Academy Award for technical achievement. This recognition was given to them in 1993 for their development of a special silicone material used in makeup applications within the film industry.

Cannom earned five Emmy nominations in his career, the first of which was for “Earth 2” in 1995.

Distinguished projects that Cannom has worked on include movies such as “Big Top Pee-wee,” “Dick Tracy,” “Alien 3,” “Batman Returns,” “The Mask,” “Blade,” “The Insider,” “Ali” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
