Greenwich Entertainment Nabs Israeli Film ‘The Milky Way’ for North America (EXCLUSIVE)

As a fervent admirer of cinematic brilliance and the remarkable journeys of filmmakers, I find myself utterly captivated by Maya Kenig’s exceptional trajectory in the world of cinema. Her latest masterpiece, “The Milky Way,” is a testament to her profound storytelling abilities and her knack for unearthing unique themes that resonate universally.

As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that “The Milky Way,” the award-winning film by Maya Kenig from the Jerusalem Film Festival, has been picked up by Greenwich Entertainment for distribution across North America. This exciting Israeli production serves as the screen debut of musician Hila Ruach, who shares the limelight with seasoned actress Hadas Yaron, known for her roles in “We Were the Lucky Ones” and “Shtisel.” I can’t wait to see this promising collaboration on the big screen!

Last year at Tallinn Black Nights, I had the privilege of witnessing the premiere of “The Milky Way,” a film that earned the Critics’ Pick Special Jury Mention. In this captivating narrative, we follow Tala, a 33-year-old artist struggling with life as a single mother after the music scene and her personal relationships failed to provide stability. Desperate for income, she takes up an unusual job at “The Milky Way,” a high-end breast milk dairy catering to affluent families. As I sat in the theater, I couldn’t help but be drawn into Tala’s world and the unique challenges she faced. This film is a must-see for anyone seeking thought-provoking storytelling that explores the complexities of modern motherhood and societal expectations.

As a movie enthusiast, I discovered that the commercialization of breast milk served as an ingenious allegory for a hilariously imaginative social class comedy. Remarkably, this thought-provoking theme was skillfully balanced with a delicate touch and a luminous cast, preventing the narrative from ever veering towards bitterness, according to Greenwich’s co-president Edward Arentz. He was the one who brokered the deal with Samuel Blanc from The Party, acting on behalf of the filmmakers.

Film producer Maya Fischer, responsible for the production at Green Productions, expressed her excitement about sharing “this heartwarming tale on breastfeeding and motherhood with North American viewers.”

I had the privilege of collaborating on a film production with Gal Greenspan, Roi Kurland, and Alona Refua at Green Productions. Additionally, I worked alongside Roni Shamis-Cohen, Inès Daien Dasi, and Yaël Fogiel from Les Films du Poisson in France. Shani Sror was my co-producer on this project.

Previously, Kenig – known for his editorial work – helmed “Off White Lies,” a film that was showcased at Berlinale’s Generation14plus. The narrative centers on a complex father-daughter relationship, unfolding amidst the backdrop of the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon.

International sales for the critically praised film “The Milky Way” are being managed by Paris-based The Party Film Sales. This movie was previously screened at the Israel Film Center Festival, held in Manhattan.
