As a seasoned film enthusiast who has traversed the cinematic landscapes of various genres and eras, I must admit that “My Pet Footprint” piques my interest like no other. With its unique blend of humor, animation, and climate activism, this series promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the genre of environmental storytelling.
Greenpeace plans to utilize comedy as a means to shift the conversation around climate change through their upcoming animated show titled “My Carbon Companion.
A humorous animated series intended for Gen Z viewers yet appealing to audiences of various ages, “My Pet Footprint” tells the story of 15-year-old Bella and her sentient carbon footprint named Betty, who carries the collective guilt of the world’s most notorious polluters. Together, they embark on a fantastical journey through time and space, witnessing up close the severe consequences of climate change primarily caused by Big Oil corporations.
In this series, we find a unique blend of dark dystopian storytelling, futuristic terminology, and a generous dose of humor. The narrative unfolds in a world where corporate leaders have discovered a method to eliminate their moral compasses, transforming them into ruthless profit-driven entities that pose an almost supernatural challenge for the protagonists.
Watch the series’ first trailer below.
Mikyoung Kim, Project Manager at Greenpeace East Asia, stated, “Our project ‘My Pet Footprint’ is more than just making a TV show – it’s sparking a global movement. Using animation and humor, we’re shaping a unique dialogue about climate change that transcends age groups and cultures. This series symbolizes our dedication to finding fresh strategies for connecting and motivating people in the pursuit of a sustainable planet.
The animation series is being created by Wit & Wisdom Studio, a Prague-based team known for their work in socially responsible filmmaking. They’ve collaborated with groups like Greenpeace, Unicef, the Wildlife Fund, and more. This project is under the direction of Daniel Bird, an experienced filmmaker who learned from the renowned Czech surrealist filmmaker and stop-motion pioneer Jan Švankmajer.
In “My Pet Footprint,” Greenpeace attempts to narrow the divide in climate discourse by injecting laughter into the discussion of intricate environmental ideas, thereby making these topics more captivating for a wider range of viewers, including myself as I critique this movie.
At the heart of this performance lies a crucial concept: by finding humor in climate change, we open up discussions that are sincere and bring it into public awareness as something less daunting. Some individuals may shy away from the subject, but once they’re already engaged, we can delve deeper into its serious aspects.
He explains that the series’ goal is to entertain first and then educate, “but not in a documentary sense. We want to teach people in a more emotional way.” He referenced Netflix’s “Mr Bates vs The Post Office” as a model, explaining that “journalists have been reporting on that for ages, but when audiences saw it presented dramatically, they got genuinely angry.”
As per the director’s statement, Wit & Wisdom has compiled a seven-episode outline, and the script for the show’s first episode has been penned down. Once the pilot is filmed, they plan to utilize this episode to attract more investors to fund Season 1 completion. This could potentially lead them to present the season at various international film festivals and markets.
Personally, I’m all about making this full series accessible for everyone. Ideally, I’d love to see it on a streaming platform, but a YouTube series would be a great starting point. Furthermore, I’d like to showcase our pilot at various film festivals and generate interest in the project. If luck is on our side, we might even find a production partner who can help us bring the rest of the season to life!
I’ve never presented an idea to a streaming giant like Netflix before, which means I don’t have access to their facilities at the moment. Therefore, our approach will be to refine this concept as much as possible first, and then we’ll make it appealing enough that they’ll come knocking on our door.
As a passionate movie critic embarking on an exciting project, I find myself at the helm of a seven-episode series that’s brimming with potential for a bigger screen. While we’ve got our sights set on a global streamer, if that partnership doesn’t materialize, we haven’t shut the door to transforming this series into a feature film. This cinematic gem would undoubtedly garner attention at film festivals before seeking wider distribution.
