Greek God of War prequel game delayed until 2026: Report

According to Jeff Grubb, an industry expert, it was announced on a recent podcast that the upcoming God of War game, which is supposed to take place in Greece, will not be released this year but instead scheduled for next year.

The God of War: Ragnarok game brought closure to Kratos’ story within the Norse gods, sparking curiosity among fans about which mythology Santa Monica Studios might explore in their future projects.

Instead of guessing that ancient Egypt would be the likely setting, it appears developers have opted to return the series to its original origins, namely Greece.

According to Jeff Grubb’s account on the June 17th edition of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, the decision-makers had a strikingly distinct concept in store for the upcoming installment in the God of War series.

Next God of War “side story” game could release in 2026

According to Grubb, it’s been confirmed that another installment in the series is being developed, and it’s rumored that this new adventure will see Kratos returning to his ancestral home in ancient Greece.

Grubb mentioned that along with the upcoming God of War Greek project, there’s also Marathon, which has been postponed to 2026 due to issues arising from using assets that were copied without permission.

For several months prior to March 2025, whispers about this game have been making the rounds. In that same month, Grubb hinted on Bluesky that he was privy to a “Greek God of War spin-off” due for release later in the year, referring to it as a “parallel narrative project.

In early June, games journalist Tom Henderson mentioned a possible “2.5D/Metroidvania game” or something similar, stating that it appears to be less expansive than he had originally anticipated. To this, Grubb responded with a simple “Yeah.” This conversation took place on platform X.

In a podcast episode from February, Henderson casually mentioned the game, revealing that instead of being set in Egypt as one might expect, it will be based in Greece. He further added that this installment will feature a younger Kratos, suggesting that it could potentially be a prequel to the existing series.

As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but express my excitement about this upcoming title. Although the specifics of its delay remain unclear, whispers suggest that it combines the epicness of God of War and the dark, atmospheric beauty of Blasphemous. What’s more, it seems to boast an even more captivating art style than Hades – a claim that has me eagerly awaiting its release!

Just as before, remember to treat these rumors lightly – there’s been relatively little chatter surrounding the franchise ever since Santa Monica Studios unveiled the Valhalla DLC towards the end of 2023. Fans have been eagerly awaiting even the slightest hint about Kratos’ next exciting journey since then.
