GreedFall 2 Devs Call Early Access Release "Painful" In Open Letter Decrying Working Conditions

As a long-time fan of Spiders Studio and their captivating RPG games, I find myself deeply concerned by the recent open letter signed by 43 of their employees. The allegations of lack of transparency, gender inequality, growing instability, and refusal to acknowledge collective action paint a troubling picture that goes beyond just the production cycle of GreedFall 2.

A public statement from the creators of GreedFall 2: The Dying World has been penned, addressing concerns about Spiders Studio’s management. They claim that transparency is lacking, there’s been no progress towards gender equality, instability within the studio is increasing, and they refuse to acknowledge collective action. These issues have reportedly led to a challenging development process for GreedFall 2.

As a passionate gamer and an even more dedicated employee at Spiders, I’m eagerly waiting for the upcoming open-world RPG’s early-access release on September 24. However, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease as I read the open letter signed by 43 of my fellow colleagues. They’ve taken a stand against our leadership, who have shown reluctance to collaborate with our studio’s labor movement.

The letter suggests that management seems to be operating as if we’re oarsmen in a ship’s hold, working tirelessly without any clarity about our voyage’s course or destination. In simpler terms, it’s like a ship drifting aimlessly, without anyone steering it.

When it comes to gender equality, the letter states no efforts have been made to improve the recruitment and retention of women and marginalized people. The letter states that only around 17% of employees at the studio are women, but that 41% of people leaving the company are women. On average, according to the letter, women at the studio are paid 14% less than men, “an unacceptable gap, which has doubled since 2021.” The letter states that despite being co-founded by a woman and run by a woman CEO, Spiders is a poor performer when it comes to gender parity, even among an “industry of underachievers” on the issue.

The letter asserts, “We do not align with this individual who exhibits sexism and hypocrisy, behavior that we find unacceptable.”

In a recent period, spiders have significantly grown in size. However, the structure and communication within the company seems to have remained static, as suggested in the letter. This situation has led to repeated work reversals and postponements due to tasks being undone and decisions frequently being altered.

The current size of our company has grown to a point where we can no longer operate with minimal organization as we once did. This growth has led us into more complex projects that are difficult to manage and solve the problems they present on time, often resulting in crunch periods or subpar work, which is disappointing for everyone involved.

Due to studio management’s reported unwillingness to address ongoing concerns with employees, a sense of widespread worry and diminished enthusiasm among those working on GreedFall 2 has arisen. The upcoming early access release date is described as “painful” in a recent letter, and production is said to be “submerged.” The current plan for the full version of the game to debut a year after the early access launch is likely to prove challenging, as there remains an extensive amount of work left to complete, according to the letter.

The letter in its list of requests urges Spiders leadership towards increased transparency, proposes restructuring and streamlining bureaucratic procedures, seeks flexibility for remote work at least three days a week, demands an immediate halt to any gender-based wage disparities affecting women and non-binary individuals, advocates for salary raises, and more.

As an eager enthusiast, I can’t help but share some exciting news! The anticipated sequel to GreedFall, titled GreedFall 2, is set to debut on Steam in early access form on September 24. Furthermore, console versions are also being developed for a future release. Interestingly enough, Spiders Studio, the creators behind this adventure, have already launched their previous game, Steelrising – a Soulslike RPG – in the year 2022. So, fellow fans, get ready to embark on another captivating journey with GreedFall 2!
