Grant Gustin Reveals The Flash Scene He Hated and Tried to Change—Here’s Why!

As a die-hard fan of superheroes, especially Barry Allen portrayed brilliantly by Grant Gustin in The Flash, I can’t help but admit that there were instances where the show seemed to veer off course. Initially, The CW’s Arrowverse was undeniably DC Comics’ standout shared universe. Yet, as the story progressed, it sometimes felt like the show lost its direction, making things less engaging.

In expressing my opinion, I’ve consistently believed that “The Flash” stood out as one of the top-notch series within the Arrowverse. Grant Gustin’s portrayal of Barry Allen, with his optimistic and heroic demeanor, was spot on. He constantly strived to move faster, devised ways to protect those he cared about, and put in the effort to maintain balance between his ordinary life and hero duties. For the most part, watching the show was an enjoyable experience, but there was a specific scene that felt incredibly over-the-top.

Grant Gustin Has Commented On 1 Scene From The Flash Season 7 He Tried To Get Changed

Grant Gustin Had Good Instincts For The Flash

In the seventeenth episode of season 7 in the series The Flash, titled “Heart of the Matter Part 2,” Barry encounters one of his most formidable adversaries yet, Godspeed. After pursuing him throughout the city, Barry manages to secure assistance from an unexpected ally, Thawne. They prepare to engage Godspeed in combat. However, Godspeed summons lightning from the heavens and uses it like a lightsaber-like weapon, prompting Flash and Thawne to each produce their own equivalent “lightsabers” in a more metaphorical manner.

It’s clear that after over nine years of portraying the hero, Grant Gustin found this particular scene a bit too outlandish during his panel at Comic Con Liverpool. He shared that he attempted to adjust the scene to a more conventional speedster battle, but the creative team remained firm on their decision. Frankly, I think Gustin had valid reasons for wanting to modify the scene.

The Flash’s “Lightsaber” Scene Does Stand Out As A Strange Choice

The Flash Is Not Star Wars… So Why Have Lightsabers?

The issue lies in the inconsistency of the scene with the series. Characters like Godspeed, Flash, and Thawne are speedsters, not Jedi, and lightsabers are fictional weapons within this show’s universe. Consequently, when Godspeed manipulates lightning, it’s intriguing but seems implausible, especially when depicted as a real light rod. To make matters worse, Barry and Thawne can summon lightning without actually drawing it from the sky; instead, they pull out what sounds like a lightsaber, reminiscent of Star Wars.

This show blends elements of fantasy and sci-fi, featuring state-of-the-art technologies, traversal across multiple universes, and even an episode dedicated to music. However, in this particular instance, the scene seems like an attempt to cater to another audience demographic. Unfortunately, it disrupts the immersive quality of the episode because it’s not consistent with the characters’ usual behavior or abilities. It would have been more coherent if these characters had relied on their speed and skills instead of this unusual weapon, which could have resulted in a stronger conclusion to the story.

I’m Convinced Grant Gustin’s The Flash Scene Change Ideas Could Have Made It Way Better

Grant Gustin Should Have Been Listened To After Years On The Show

At this stage, Grant Gustin had accumulated a deep and profound grasp of the character Barry Allen, as well as his role as a hero. Yet, it seems that his creative suggestions weren’t always given the same weight. However, if the show had swapped the lightsaber fight for a more conventional speedster battle, the uncomfortable scene might not have occurred.

In the progression of the series, there had already been numerous speedster battles, and the creative team was likely seeking innovative methods to keep it exciting and original. However, the lightsaber duels fell flat. The show might have benefited from showcasing Thawne and Flash collaborating on some joint moves, or devising a strategy to counter Godspeed’s abilities. In all sincerity, virtually any other idea would have been more suitable for The Flash compared to the disappointing lightsaber fight that was ultimately presented.
