As a dedicated follower of socially conscious documentaries and an ardent admirer of Grain Media‘s groundbreaking work, I find their recent restructuring not just intriguing but inspiring. For years, I have been moved by their heartfelt stories about the climate crisis, warzones, and biodiversity that resonated deeply with me.
Grain Media, the prestigious British documentary production company known for creating award-winning films like “The White Helmets,” “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl),” and “Virunga,” has reorganized its operations to navigate the ongoing difficulties within the documentary industry. They aim to carry on producing socially relevant films that have made them famous.
Jorge Villon-funded Grace Labs, housed within Grain, is planning an expansion by bringing on new team members. Until now, Grace Labs has mainly worked on projects related to environmental and biodiversity issues. However, it’s transitioning into a hub for all socially-conscious filmmaking under Grain. This expanded role will also see Grace adopting a commercial approach in positioning its concepts, making them more appealing to commissioners.
According to Grain co-founder Orlando von Einsiedel, “We create movies focusing on matters we deem significant.” However, it’s challenging to get these projects commissioned. To address this issue, we are leveraging our experience with Grace Labs and broadening the concept considerably. I believe we’ve now developed a more effective approach to produce films about similar issues, but in a way that appeals to a broader global audience.
Instead of focusing on selling a “truly significant film concerning the climate crisis,” von Einsiedel is now more interested in promoting films that offer excitement as “thrillers”, mystery as “conspiracy stories”, adrenaline as “action movies”, and suspense as “survival stories”.
According to Grace Labs’ Creative Director, Chloe Leland, the growth and expanded responsibilities of Grace Labs within Grain could potentially boost their production. This expansion supposedly expands our development hub, which in turn might result in more projects being commissioned. Furthermore, it offers us the opportunity to handle a larger number of projects since we can devote more time and careful consideration to developing truly captivating and creative proposals.
After experiencing one of its toughest years ever in its 20-year existence, as confirmed by von Einsiedel, Grain is now announcing changes involving restructuring and growth. This hardship mirrors a crisis that has affected many within the documentary industry, with networks reducing their spending or focus, some even shutting down, and traditional financiers like Participant Media ceasing operations. For the first time, job cuts were necessary at Grain.
He states that throughout the period, there have been numerous difficulties within the industry, but none have left us feeling as bad as what we’re experiencing now.
However, the year 2024 concluded triumphantly for our company, as two of our latest grain-themed productions garnered success on Netflix.
Simultaneously, “The Lost Children,” a story about four native kids surviving in the Colombian Amazon after a plane crash, gained an impressive 7.6 million views.
According to von Einsiedel, the popularity of these two works serves as evidence that there remains a genuine interest in tales rich with complexity and depth concerning matters significant to Grain, suggesting an enduring demand for such narratives.
However, it’s crucial that they are arranged correctly to secure a ‘Yes’ from executives at networks, and this has primarily revolved around the way we’ve presented and marketed them. Essentially, Grace Labs serves as our tool for continuing this approach in the future.
