The final chapter of ‘Good American Family‘ unfolds with Episode 8 titled ‘Stained Hands’, marking the conclusion of Natalia Grace’s struggle against Kristine and Michael Barnett.
In Episode 7, I found myself in a tough spot when the judge dismissed my plea to update my age to my actual birth year – 2003. But, years down the line, Detective Brandon Drysdale took another look at my case and uncovered some mind-blowing secrets.
Initially, the family doctor supporting Kristine’s assertions, and upon further examination by a group of specialists, it was unanimously agreed that Natalia was indeed a child at the time of her adoption by the Barnetts.
In the closing sequence, we were transported to the year 2020, where Natalia ultimately revealed the truth on Dr. Phil, accompanied by her newly adopted parents, Cynthia and Antwon Mans. Please be aware: spoilers are included below!
Dr. Phil continued
In Episode 8 of Good American Family, the story continues right from where it ended last time, finding Natalia, Cynthia, and Antwon appearing as guests on Dr. Phil’s show. During their discussion, Natalia shares that she was adopted into the Barnett family when she was just a child.
Dr. Phil is wondering why a seemingly kind family might have carried out such actions, and that’s when Cynthia speaks up, “Well, when Natalia started dating us, there were instances where her behavior wasn’t always appropriate.
Cynthia tells Natalia, “Don’t worry, you’re not a burden. It seems like you might be going through a tough time.
Kristine took her on as a project, but when circumstances became challenging and she found herself unable to fulfill the motherly role she aspired to, she felt compelled to seek a solution to part ways.
Eventually, Dr. Phil inquires as to why Natalia is planning to sue the Barnetts. Presently, Natalia being only 16, longs for the return of her carefree youth; yet, her primary desire now is to seek justice.
No one can vouch for Kristine Barnett
In their conference room, Kristine, Michael, Jen, along with their legal representatives, are carefully analyzing the recent interview, aiming to strategize effectively for the upcoming court proceedings.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to echo Terrence’s sentiments: though we may bask in the praise of the court of public opinion, let us not forget that the court of law is an entirely distinct entity.
The situation becomes increasingly intricate as they strive to substantiate their claims. This is due to the lack of any witnesses able to corroborate their assertions that Natalia was either a) a sociopath or b) an adult at the time they adopted her.
The First Paths Adoption Center could potentially harm Natalia’s reputation, but it wouldn’t definitively prove anything. All non-Dr. Stephen Lawrence medical experts concur that Natalia was indeed a minor.
At the elementary school Natalia went to, Dr. Walker states that Kristine’s allegations are untrue and describes Natalia as an exceptionally kind child. Meanwhile, a nurse at Larue Psychiatric Hospital shared that they were shocked when they had to transfer Natalia to the adult ward.
In New Jersey, the woman who once raised Natalia as an adoptive mother also makes similar remarks, implying that Natalia was a child and they were unable to fulfill her needs, which suggests that Kristine may have drawn inspiration for this situation from the horror film “Orphan.
Eventually, Natalia’s previous neighbor admits feeling remorse after learning that Natalia was just a child when they lived as neighbors.
Kristine unwaveringly maintains her accusations against Natalia, casting doubt on each and every witness in her favor. However, her stance isn’t likely to aid her case.
Natalia Grace has a bright idea
Meanwhile, Natalia, Cynthia, Antwon, Brandon, and Prosecutor Starbuck are observing the testimonials, delighted as they now seem to be in support of Natalia.
Yet, Starbuck cautions that their confidence might be premature; they’re still in need of a solid explanation as to why the Barnetts committed such a heinous act. Meanwhile, Brandon has been meticulously searching through Kristine and Michael’s text exchanges, but so far, he hasn’t found any incriminating evidence.
This sparks an idea in Natalia. ‘Kristine is active on Facebook,’ she suggests, and so they choose to issue a subpoena for their Facebook messages, which they do only two days before the trial.”
In this version, I tried to maintain the original meaning while making it more natural by using “sparks an idea” instead of “gives Natalia an idea,” and changing the structure of the second sentence slightly.
Simultaneously, Michael engages in a conversation after a meeting with his newlywed spouse, Jen. Initially, he stands as the defendant in a trial for allegations of child neglect and negligence towards a dependent. The verdict in this case could influence the subsequent trial against Kristine.
In this scenario, Terrance approaches them with an alternative, often extreme measure, referred to as “the nuclear option”. If their situation worsens and the case doesn’t favor them, Michael has the option to provide testimony against Kristine, gaining immunity from prosecution in return.
Jen is fully on board with it, however, Michael has reservations about testifying against the mother of his three kids, even though she continues to deny him visitation rights.
Val starts to doubt Kristine
Currently, Kristine remains unenlightened about the situation. At Val’s residence, she attempts to persuade her dearest friend to act as a witness, having exhausted all other options from her list. However, it is only when she realizes that Kristine is asking her to lie under oath that Val sees this as a game.
Kristine clarifies, “The attorneys have mentioned that if Mike is acquitted, they’ll dismiss my charges as well.” In response, Val expresses her readiness to testify on Kristine’s behalf and speak highly of her.
However, as stated by Kristine, the primary focus will be on discussing Natalia, her behavior, particularly how aggressive and manipulative she was, and how she posed a risk to you and your family.
Val appears puzzled, admitting, “Yes, I apologize, I’m just trying to sort things out. To be honest, I don’t recall witnessing any of the incidents you mentioned. Those are things that you’ve shared with me, correct? I can’t testify in court about events I didn’t personally observe, right?” Kristine concurs, but her anger is palpable.
The most incriminating messages
In Episode 8 of the Hulu series, I found myself captivated by the chilling trail of Facebook messages. It’s a gripping, albeit disturbing, piece of evidence that leaves me appalled. The exchanges between Kristine and Michael were nothing short of vile, and it’s evidently upsetting to Terrance who highlights their repeated use of the derogatory term “m*dget” when referring to Natalia.
As a gamer putting myself in the shoes of Michael and Kristine, I can’t help but find their claim of ignorance hard to swallow. After all, when you look at the pile of chat logs we have here, filled with appalling remarks about their adopted daughter, it seems unlikely they weren’t aware of the language used around her, especially since she was referred to as “that thing.
Switching to Natalia’s response, it’s clear she’s deeply hurt, and Detective Brandon attempts to console her. It’s disclosed that Michael also sent a message to Kristine, claiming he has a video of her physically abusing Natalia in the living room when she was trying to extract the truth from her.
Brandon expressed, “I knew it wasn’t good, but the language they used, it’s distressing to have you witness this.” To which Natalia responded, “It mirrors how many people speak about individuals like myself.
He suggests to her that she isn’t obligated to attend court if it becomes too overwhelming, but Natalia firmly asserts, “When I assure you I can manage this situation, please believe me.
Kristine and Michael reunite
Following the surprise of the texts, Kristine consents to give Michael a ride home, and their conversation escalates into a disagreement where they both point fingers at one another.
Michael shares the details of the immunity agreement with Kristine, but her response turns manipulative. “Don’t you think it would be terrible if I ended up in prison?” she asks, “Considering that the boys would grow up without a mother.
When Michael seems unsure, she encourages him to return to their household to review the records jointly. However, their three boys are present, and they aren’t pleased about their father’s arrival. It turns out that Kristine had informed them that he had caused her harm.
Upstairs they ascend, and it’s in this moment that Michael has an epiphany: if there’s no one to vouch for her, perhaps Kristine fabricated the whole age predicament. Instead of owning up to any part in it, as he often does, he shifts all blame onto his former spouse.
He begins to experience a panic episode, with Kristine providing comfort throughout. Once he regains his composure, she reassures him, “Don’t let them manipulate you. They can’t erase all the progress you’ve made. Natalia was deceiving you, she posed a threat.
After that, I can’t help but stroke his ego, praising him as a fine man and an exceptional father. Our bond deepens, but right when we were about to share our first kiss, our kids burst into the room, demanding food.
Natalia’s biological mother comes forward
They all gather for a shared meal, but the atmosphere is undeniably tense, given that the sons continue to view their father as an adversary.
Over our evening meal, I received a phone call from Terrance. He urged me to look at my messages, and there I found an exciting revelation: The Daily Mail had somehow reached out to Natalia’s biological mother, Anna Gava, in Ukraine.
The report supports Natalia’s account of what happened: she was born in 2003. This evidence might very well spell the end for his case, and it could lead Michael to accept the immunity offer if things go awry. As Terrence notes, Kristine would act similarly if the situation were reversed.
Natasha is predictably taken aback by the report, as it contains identical quotes from the actual Daily Mail article. Anna stated that doctors advised her to abandon Natasha at birth, implying that she wouldn’t be able to cover the necessary surgeries – a choice she regrets daily.
Instead of saying “Kristine is trying to brush it off, telling Jacob, ‘I don’t read lies.'”, you could rephrase it as “Kristine pretends not to notice, telling Jacob, ‘I don’t take deceit seriously.'” However, ignoring the issue won’t work forever.
The trial takes a turn for the worse
During the pre-trial conference, an unexpected development arises. Starbuck proposes pushing back the trial to conduct a DNA test on Natalia’s biological mother in Ukraine. This action is aimed at gathering additional proof about Natalia’s age, potentially strengthening their case.
Terrance discovered a piece of significant info that alters everything: it turns out the State didn’t seek an appeal on Natalia’s age determination, which was decided back in 2017, five years ago.
This occurred because Cynthia managed to persuade Natalia that she was under an excessive load at the moment. However, despite having substantial proof that Natalia was actually a minor, the judge decided in favor of the Barnetts.
In my perspective as an ardent observer, it’s clear that this court will not establish a new precedent for criminal cases to challenge civil rulings, particularly ones that have been affirmed numerous times. Therefore, I am granting the defense’s motion to discard the four charges that are contingent on Ms. Barnett’s minor status.
In essence, the charges against Mike for alleged child neglect were dropped because the point in question about his age no longer holds water.
Four legal matters regarding Natalia remain unchanged, but with a significant condition attached: We cannot refer to her as a child, we must avoid mentioning her education or the process of adoption, and any discussion about altering her age is strictly prohibited.
Unfortunately, being a fan and considering Natalia’s legal age, it’s disheartening to know that events happening before 2014 fall outside the statute of limitations – a timeframe that follows the Barnett controversy. This means any potential offenses during that period can no longer be pursued legally.
The Barnetts win the battle…
Following a break, they resume court proceedings to address the outstanding allegations; however, the trial turns out to be an utter chaos. The testimonies of various witnesses – medical professionals, neighbors, educators, and friends – are all dismissed because of stringent restrictions.
1. All points raised by Michael were upheld, effectively weakening Natalia’s argument. Consequently, the jury determined that Michael was not at fault, allowing him to leave freely.
2. The arguments from Michael’s side were all maintained, which made it difficult for Natalia’s team. As a result, the jury decided that Michael was innocent and he could walk away without any restrictions.
3. Michael’s objections stood unchallenged, putting Natalia’s team in a tight spot. With this, the jury found Michael not guilty and granted him his freedom.
4. Each point made by Michael proved valid, leaving little room for doubt. The jury thus concluded that Michael was innocent, allowing him to leave without any legal constraints.
5. In the end, all of Michael’s counterarguments were sustained, making it challenging for Natalia’s team. With this, the jury decided that Michael was not guilty and he was set free.
After this heavy setback, Natalia finds herself seated in the stairwell outside the courtroom, with Cynthia offering solace. Overwhelmed by past injustices, Natalia struggles to keep Cynthia at arm’s length and shifts responsibility for her pain onto her new mother figure.
In a different way of saying it: Cynthia expresses, “I adore you, and I don’t believe you intend to distance yourself,” but Natalia counters back, “I am a fully grown adult. You can’t dictate my desires for me.” And so, Cynthia chooses to grant her some autonomy.
… Natalia wins the war
Despite Michael’s court victory, it seems evident that the public supports Natalia more strongly. On social media, Kristine faces a barrage of negative comments, and even Val, who used to be her strongest supporter, starts to doubt whether Natalia might have been speaking truthfully throughout this ordeal.
She emphasizes that Natalia appeared mature during her court testimony, noting the significant change in her since she stayed with the Barnetts, a transformation that would not have occurred had she been 22 years old at that time.
In a decision made by Kristine, both she and Jacob choose to vacate Val’s residence. On their drive, it dawns on Jacob that his mother had been untruthful. Looking back, he tells her, “I recall your actions towards Natalia.
Once more, Kristine attempts to twist the circumstances, claiming he’s too young to recall and that she protected him from it. However, he corrects her, “Yet, you didn’t.” He admits, “I witnessed it, and I’m struggling to come to terms with what I saw.
The public finally know the truth
Following the court case, Natalia seeks out Michael in search of more than just legal explanations – emotional clarity is what she yearns for. She queries him on whether he was aware that she was still young, and wonders why he didn’t shield or safeguard her from harm.
Instead of accepting responsibility, Michael argues that they were both victimized by Kristine, implying they encountered the same adversity. However, Natalia counters, “Michael, I was just a child. You were meant to be my father.
People who have watched “The Curious Case of Natalia Grace” would recognize that Natalia didn’t receive the resolution she sought from Michael, and just like Natalia, he often referred to their relationship as involving two ‘similar troubled individuals.’
The dialogue between them comes to an abrupt halt as Kristine arrives and requests to stay, however, her proposition is firmly declined since Michael’s current spouse, Jen, resides at the residence now.
In a friendly manner, Jacob interrupts to express regret to Natalia. He tells her, “You may have given us the impression that you were someone to fear, but in truth, you were just a child like myself.” He then adds, “I genuinely apologize.” To this, Natalia responds, “That’s alright, as you were also young at the time.
Kristine gets annoyed and informs Jacob they’re heading to her mother’s place, but Jacob isn’t keen on tagging along. Instead, Mike offers for him to spend the night at his place, which leaves Kristine by herself.
After departing, Natalia makes her way back home and is warmly welcomed by her adopted family members. A flurry of encouraging messages arrives from various parts of the globe, which they read out loud. One message reads, “I’m truly sorry for any doubt I may have caused you,” while another declares, “You’re an incredible fighter.
For the first occasion in quite some while, Natalia flashes a smile. Although she didn’t prevail in the legal case, in the collective consciousness of the public, the truth has ultimately been revealed – and Natalia Grace is no longer isolated.
