UK-based entertainment financer Goldfinch has formed a strategic alliance with The Squad, a Web3-focused film production company established by director Jordan Bayne.
As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that my team, The Squad, is stepping into uncharted territory as the pioneering Web3 studio embedded within a renowned independent film finance and production group. Our partnership aims to forge a dynamic pipeline of films, TV shows, and immersive experiences by merging Goldfinch’s decade-long industry knowledge with our expertise in Web3 technologies, generative AI, and audience engagement tools.
Under the Goldfinch corporate roof, The Squad is the one who first introduced the “Film3” idea – a unique model that puts creators at the forefront by focusing on ownership, financing, and distribution around artists instead of typical studio systems. This innovative approach significantly deviates from traditional film funding methods, relying on crowd-funded resources, advanced AI for production processes, and direct connections to audiences for distribution.
According to Bayne, this collaboration signifies a massive change in how narratives are created, controlled, and consumed. In his new position as head of Web3 and GenAI at Goldfinch, Bayne stated that The Squad has been designing the framework for a future where creators lead intellectual property since 2021. This new era employs community-funded financing, AI-assisted production processes, and direct distribution to audiences. Essentially, this is how the Film3 business model operates.
Established in 2014, Goldfinch boasts a substantial financial backing for their collaborations, having funded over 300 projects and invested approximately $250 million. Their business ventures encompass Dreamtown Entertainment, the award-winning First Flights (Oscar and BAFTA winners), and their newest addition, Goldfinch International, which is broadening its reach into Asia and the Middle East.
Kirsty Bell, CEO and founder of Goldfinch, stated: “At Goldfinch, we’ve always been forward-thinkers, and given the rapid changes in the entertainment industry today, it’s crucial that we adopt innovation to stay afloat. The fact that Jordan has created such an impressive venture in a short time span, with no budget, is truly astonishing.
In this arrangement, executives Bell and Phil McKenzie from Goldfinch are set to assume advisory positions within The Squad. Their role will be to assist Bayne in expanding operations and merging conventional production methods with the innovative Film3 and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
Bayne, whose Oscar-contending short film “The Sea Is All I Know” featuring Melissa Leo, has embraced Web3 technology in the film industry early on. She made history as the first to mint an NFT of her short film “Red Flags” on Zora, which was then acquired by AI artist Claire Silver. Her debut AI-created short film, titled “ᏌᎪᏂᎨ,” has landed her a nomination for Escape AI’s Master of the Craft Award.
Companies have shared that they’re currently working on various projects, with significant updates expected soon – such as a series of long-term original productions jointly created with prominent Hollywood creators and pioneering AI developers in the field of generative technology.
