The Golden Globes Awards on Sunday night offered a blend of anticipated victories – such as Kieran Culkin, Zoe Saldaña, “Shōgun”, and “Baby Reindeer” – alongside enjoyable surprises. Nikki Glaser’s excellent hosting skills added to the relief, as did unexpected wins in film and TV categories for Demi Moore, Colin Farrell, while “Anora” and “The Wild Robot” came up short. Several winners appeared stunned during their speeches, including Fernanda Torres from “I’m Still Here” and Jacques Audiard of “Emilia Perez”. With its wins in the best drama, director, and actor in a drama categories, “The Brutalist” solidified itself as the primary contender for this awards season.
It’s yet unclear how these unexpected outcomes will impact the broader awards season, as there isn’t much overlap between the members of the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards. However, some compelling speeches could potentially sway voters, although they might be reluctant to acknowledge it. Notably, the company behind EbMaster, PMC, is jointly involved with Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Golden Globes, alongside Eldridge.
Fernanda Torres Stuns Everyone With a Win for Actress in a Drama
The most surprising victory of the night went to Fernanda Torres for her moving portrayal in “I’m Still Here.” Her character, a woman who struggles after her husband vanishes during Brazil’s military dictatorship, delivered an understated performance that stood out among other nominees. Angelina Jolie sang opera in “Maria” and Nicole Kidman bared all in “Babygirl,” both of whom are renowned in their own right. The competition for best actress this year is incredibly fierce, and Torres’ win adds even more intrigue to the race. This unexpected triumph was predicted only by Clayton Davis, EbMaster’s awards editor.
The Musical or Comedy Category Surprises with Wins for Demi Moore and Sebastian Stan
In one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling surprises of the evening, Demi Moore unexpectedly outshone anticipated favorites Cynthia Erivo and Mikey Madison in the category for best actress, winning for her role in the body-horror film “The Substance.” During her emotional acceptance speech, Moore expressed that this was her first ever win for acting, a milestone she had never reached before. She also mentioned an earlier comment from a producer who labeled her as a “popcorn actress,” suggesting that she was limited in her potential. However, this producer’s assessment proved to be incorrect, as anyone who has witnessed Moore’s exceptional performance in writer-director Coralie Fargeat’s film can attest. In “The Substance,” Moore portrays Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging actress who resorts to drastic measures in a desperate bid for relevance – an act that one must witness to truly believe! This year’s best actress competition is fierce, but Moore’s powerful speech might just earn her an Oscar nomination.
After Moore’s victory, Sebastian Stan was summoned to the stage to accept the award for his portrayal in “A Different Man,” a role where he embodies a neurotic actor suffering from neurofibromatosis who receives an experimental treatment that transforms him into the likeness of the Winter Soldier. Many critics had predicted Eisenberg as the front-runner for his poignant performance in “A Real Pain.” However, with Stan being nominated in two categories this year, he thanked his other film, the biographical drama about Donald Trump titled “The Apprentice,” which could have contributed to his win.
“Emilia Pérez” Beats “Anora” and “Wicked” for Musical/Comedy
Among a multitude of open categories during an unusually expansive awards season, “Emilia Pérez” was crowned with the prestigious Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy. Despite being the most nominated musical in the history of the Golden Globes, its victory was far from certain. The stripper comedy-drama “Anora,” which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, has been captivating audiences since its release; the Broadway musical adaptation “Wicked” has been shattering box office records for weeks; the dark satire “The Substance” has become one of the season’s most talked-about films; and the heartwarming “A Real Pain” has touched just about everyone who’s watched it. Interestingly, Luca Guadagnino’s acclaimed “Challengers,” which debuted in April, is a less prominent contender this year, primarily due to its early release date.
Eventually, “Pérez” surpassed all other contenders, earning it a series of victories – in supporting actress, original song, and for a non-English language film, as well as best comedy or musical. This impressive haul of awards has undeniably catapulted the Netflix production to prominence during this year’s award season.
“Wicked” Wins Only Box Office Achievement
This year’s standout film, “Wicked,” has made a significant impact in various ways. It has been a blockbuster at the box office, garnered critical acclaim during award seasons, and sparked widespread cultural conversations. Despite director Jon M. Chu not receiving recognition for his work, the movie was nominated for four Golden Globes, with Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande receiving nominations in the actress and supporting actress categories, respectively. Additionally, “Wicked” was nominated in both best musical or comedy category and the newly created box office achievement category. As the awards season heats up, it is the latter award that “Wicked” will be taking home, surpassing Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which was a strong contender.
“Anora” Wins Nothing at All
At tonight’s Globes, “Anora” stood out among top nominees as the only film that had previously won a significant film award – the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. With nominations for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), Director, Actress, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay, many anticipated that the thought-provoking dramedy, which follows the life of a stripper and sex worker (Mikey Madison) who gets caught up in the lavish lifestyle of a Russian oligarch’s troubled son (Mark Eydelshteyn), would at least secure a win. Surprisingly, “Anora” was the most high-profile nominee to leave empty-handed.
Colin Farrell Ices Out “Baby Reindeer” Star Richard Gadd With Win for “The Penguin”
Despite the Hollywood Foreign Press Association facing dissolution following its scandals and underlying corruption being unveiled by the Los Angeles Times, certain peculiarities in the voting process persist – and that’s quite amusing! In this instance, Colin Farrell triumphed for HBO’s “The Batman” spin-off, “The Penguin.” Farrell portrayed Oswald Cobb beneath multiple layers of prosthetics, yet still managed to give a moving performance as Oz rose through Gotham’s criminal ranks, at a significant personal price.
Farrell’s success prevented the Emmy-winning series “Baby Reindeer” from achieving a clean sweep, even though Richard Gadd’s limited series did eventually secure victories in both the series category and in the supporting actress category, where Jessica Gunning was honored for her portrayal of the stalker, Martha.
Tadanobu Asano of “Shōgun” Slices Through the Supporting Actor Competition
Despite losing the Emmys drama supporting actor award in September for his outstanding portrayal of the cunning warlord Yabushige in “Shogun,” Tadanobu Asano managed to pull off an unexpected victory at the Golden Globes. This category encompasses performances from drama, comedy, and limited series, and he faced stiff competition, particularly from Ebon Moss-Bachrach of “The Bear” who won the comedy supporting actor Emmy. However, during his speech, Asano seemed overjoyed, introducing himself to the audience as a Japanese actor: “Perhaps you don’t know me, but I am Tadanobu Asano!” Could we possibly see Yabushige return for Season 2 of Shogun? Let’s hope so, Shogun creators!
Ali Wong Bests Jamie Foxx, Adam Sandler and Globes Host Nikki Glaser in the New-ish TV Stand-up Category
This year marks only the second instance of this category being separate for stand-up specials, with Ricky Gervais taking the prize last time around. Given the lack of historical examples to reference, even Ali Wong appeared taken aback when she won for her Netflix production “Ali Wong: Single Lady”, over a number of notable contenders such as Jamie Foxx and his HBO special “Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…” which discussed his 2023 stroke. The event was hosted by Nikki Glaser, who had been favored to win for her own HBO production “Nikki Glaser: Someday You’ll Die”, but she ultimately found humor in the situation, jesting that despite not winning this evening, she managed to make $11,000 by betting on Ali Wong at an online gambling platform in Europe.
