Legendary Pictures is strongly investing in Queensland as the top destination for its massive MonsterVerse series, with filming currently taking place on the upcoming sequel.
Following the monumental success of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” the studio’s box office champion and the largest Godzilla film ever, they are returning to Village Roadshow Studios for their next monstrous collaboration. This is the fourth Monsterverse production filmed in Queensland, with previous ones being “Kong: Skull Island” (2017), “Godzilla vs. Kong” (2021) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (2024). In simpler terms, the studio is producing another monster movie at Village Roadshow Studios, which has been the location for four movies in this series, starting from 2017.
Director Grant Sputore, known for the film “I Am Mother”, is leading this upcoming feature. Dan Stevens will again play Trapper in the cast, which also includes Kaitlyn Dever (from “The Last of Us”), Jack O’Connell (“Sinners”), Alycia Debnam-Carey (“Apple Cider Vinegar”), Sam Neill (“Jurassic Park”), Matthew Modine (“Oppenheimer”), and Delroy Lindo (“The Good Fight”). In simpler terms, Sputore is helming the project with Stevens reprising his role as Trapper. The cast also features Kaitlyn Dever, Jack O’Connell, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Sam Neill, Matthew Modine, and Delroy Lindo.
The storyline indicates that beloved characters Godzilla and Kong will join forces to confront a devastating, world-destroying peril, maintaining the series’ tradition of high-stakes apocalyptic scenarios. Screenwriters Dave Callaham (“Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse”) and Michael Lloyd Green (“I Am Mother”) are responsible for penning the script.
Off-screen, Sputore has gathered an elite team for his project. This team includes Dan Mindel, the cinematographer known from “Twisters”, Stefan Dechant, the production designer of “Kong: Skull Island”, Josh Schaeffer, the editor who worked on “Godzilla x Kong”, and Kelly Port, the VFX supervisor recognized for her work in “Avengers: Endgame”.
As a passionate movie lover, I can’t help but be thrilled about the upcoming film production in Queensland. It’s not just about watching great movies; it’s about supporting the local community and economy. This project is expected to hire over 400 talented actors and crew members, breathing life into our artistic scene. Furthermore, it’s projected to infuse an impressive AUD93 million ($59.3 million) into our region, boosting businesses and creating opportunities for everyone. It’s a win-win situation that I can’t wait to witness unfold!
Queensland has earned a global reputation as a cinematic wonderland, a fact underscored by the high number of major movies now shooting in our magnificent state as their filming location,” Langbroek stated.
The MonsterVerse, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, has amassed more than $2.5 billion worldwide from its four cinema releases and has made a move into streaming via Apple TV+’s “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.”
Alex Garcia from Legendary expressed delight about continuing our partnership with Queensland, as we create another chapter in this renowned series. The state’s top-tier film production facilities and skilled workforce have played a significant role in the global triumph of the MonsterVerse movie franchise.”
Instead of saying “We’re glad to extend our collaboration with Queensland”, I said “Alex Garcia from Legendary expressed delight about continuing our partnership with Queensland”. Instead of saying “as we bring to life a new installment in this epic franchise,” I said “as we create another chapter in this renowned series”. The meaning and flow remain the same, but the words are varied for better readability.)
The project is backed financially by several entities, including the Australian Government’s Location Offset program, the Queensland Government’s Production Attraction Strategy, as well as the City of Gold Coast.
