God of War TV Show Just Got an Amazing Update but Fans Are Worried About the Showrunner

The God of War TV series being developed by Prime Video is yet to be fully completed, and Amazon seems quite optimistic about it; however, a potential issue might arise.

In times past, video game adaptations were often seen as jinxed, and a glance at movies like House of the Dead, Doom, and Alone in the Dark makes it clear why this perception persisted.

Nevertheless, the times have indeed evolved, as The Last of Us stood out among the most notable television series in 2023, Fallout offered a remarkable reinvention of Bethesda’s classic brand, and Arcane is undeniably one of Netflix’s finest productions to date.

God of War is getting the big-budget, small-screen treatment via Amazon, with showrunner Ronald D. Moore (For All Mankind, Battlestar Galactica) at the helm.

God of War confirmed to get 2 seasons on Amazon

According to Moore, Amazon has already green-lit two seasons of the God of War series.

“Right now I’m working on an adaptation of God of War… a big title in the gaming world that Amazon has ordered two seasons, and they’ve asked me to come in, so I’m literally in the writers room and working on that, that’s my new thing,” he told Katee Sachoff.

The series was first announced in 2022, with The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins developing it alongside Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, the creators of The Expanse. It was officially ordered by the end of the year, but all three writers left the project in October 2024 as the studios took it in a “different creative direction.”

Moore was hired as showrunner shortly after, and it’s remained in the works ever since. Little is known about exactly what shape the TV show will take and which games (if any specifically) it will adapt.

God of War fans have one worry about the TV show

In the same interview with Sackhoff, Moore admitted he wasn’t much of a gamer. “I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay I’ve never done this before,’” he explained.

Although I’ve given the game a try, I wouldn’t consider myself a gamer. I gave it a shot… I come from the arcade era where you would insert coins to play and push buttons frantically, so I can handle that.

The fact that Moore hasn’t played any of the God of War games has left fans a bit concerned. “Why do studios exclusively hire people who have zero passion for the source material? There’s a reason Peter Jackson made such great Lord of the Rings films… he actually loved the books,” one user tweeted.

“As a single quote from the person in charge of the show I’m concerned lol,” another wrote. “He… didn’t play the games but he’s making the show? Uh oh,” a third posted.

“Does he at least know the plot of the series? At least watch some YouTube walkthrough or something. Plz don’t spit ball,” a fourth added.

However, as others have pointed out, Moore’s work speaks for itself, and an attachment to the original games doesn’t mean he’s incapable of making a faithful adaptation.

“Two seasons locked in already? Amazon must have a lot of faith in this. Let’s just hope the showrunner respects the source material, even if he couldn’t get past the tutorial,” one user wrote.

I’m confident that God of War will be fantastic, given how skillfully Ron has blended multiple mythologies in Battlestar Galactica. To me, God of War feels like a part of the Battlestar Galactica family, as Bear McCreary created its music.
