God of War Ragnarok on PC Has a Major Flaw Fixed by a Fan

As a seasoned PC gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the release of God of War: Ragnarok left me a bit disheartened. The less enthusiastic reception compared to its predecessor is quite noticeable, and one issue that’s been causing a stir among the community is the requirement for a PlayStation Network account in a single-player game.

As a gamer myself, I jumped at the chance to play God of War: Ragnarok when it dropped last week. Excitedly, I hopped onto Steam the next day only to find that out of all the reviews, just 66% were positive. It’s been a few days since then, and now around 70% of the reviews are favorable, but it’s clear that the response to this game is significantly less ecstatic compared to its predecessor.

Among the primary causes for unfavorable feedback (such as memory leaks, for instance) is the necessity to possess a PlayStation Network account, despite this game being designed solely for single-player use. This predicament has infuriated PC gamers so much that one of them, iArtorias, decided to take action and created a modification called “NoPSSDK”.

With this modification installed, you won’t need a PSN account anymore. Although the game might prompt you to connect your PlayStation and Steam profiles (as shown in the image provided), simply declining this request will allow you to continue playing without any issues.

To set up the game, all you have to do is extract the mod’s archive into your main game directory. This should suffice for many users. However, if a problem arises later on, locate and remove the specific file within the folder.

For certain users, it seems the game is yet to function without a PlayStation Network (PSN) account. If this happens, the mod creator suggests preventing the GoWR.exe file from accessing your network via a firewall.

As a dedicated gamer, I find it utterly ludicrous to demand a PlayStation Network account even for single-player games. Creating a mod, however, brings an immense sense of satisfaction because, let’s face it, one of the most enticing aspects of gaming on a PC is that enthusiasts like us can frequently tweak and alter elements we don’t prefer thanks to modifications.

Recall that the PSN requirement severely damaged another Sony game – Helldivers 2. In this case, we are talking about an online game, so typically this wouldn’t cause such a reaction, but players were angered by the fact that the requirement to have such an account was added only a few months after the release (despite earlier suggestions). In this case, the reaction was so negative that Sony backed out of this decision. Players’ victory was temporary, however, as the requirement returned in the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima. The Japanese corporation seems determined to require a PSN account for all its new PC conversions. So we can expect to see many more mods in the style of NoPSSDK in the future.
