God of War Live-Service Canceled: A Big PlayStation Surprise!

It’s been reported that two unrevealed PlayStation games were canceled, and one of these was rumored to be a God of War live-service game.

Sony is gradually reducing the scope of its aggressive plan for live-service games. Initially aiming to launch a dozen such games by March 2026, some projects, such as Concord, have failed, while others have been shelved prior to their release.

According to reports by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, two more projects in the live-service category have been cancelled. One of these was being developed by Bend Studio, the team behind the 2019 release Days Gone. The other project was under development at Bluepoint Games, a team recognized for their work on remasters and remakes, such as the 2020 Demon Souls launch for PS5.

Despite limited information about the specifics of these online multiplayer titles, Schreier further explained on social media that Bluepoint’s project involved a live-service God of War game.

God of War was set for a live-service spinoff

According to a Sony representative, they verified the information with Schreier, explaining that the decision to scrap the two games was made internally “after a thorough evaluation.

Although the game has been completely closed down, the representative confirmed that both development teams will keep working, albeit without specifying whether there might be job cuts involved.

We’re proud to have both ‘Bend’ and ‘Bluepoint’ as esteemed teams within our PlayStation Studios family. Currently, we’re collaborating closely with each studio to decide on their upcoming projects.

Previously, Bluepoint was involved as a support studio during the production of God of War Ragnarok, the 2022 sequel. Given this timeline, it’s likely that they have been developing their live-service version of the IP for at least two years, considering a typical development period of this scale.

This new game would be their first original production since 2006, as they primarily focus on creating remastered versions, re-imagined games, or compilations.

It’s impossible to know exactly how a live-service God of War game might have operated. One possible scenario could resemble the 2023 Valhalla update, featuring recurring content and some microtransactions. However, this is just an assumption.

Since Santa Monica Studio hasn’t shared any details about their upcoming projects, it’s uncertain whether they are simultaneously developing a fresh single-player game within their iconic franchise alongside this live-service derivative.

For Bend Studio, it’s been six long years since their last game release, and it might well be several more years before a new project materializes.

Indeed, it’s not the first time an unscheduled live-service game has been terminated. Back in early 2024, there were whispers about a multiplayer Spider-Man game that sparked quite a buzz online. However, even Sony couldn’t save that one from being canceled as well.
