God of War creator is secretly cooking Sony Santa Monica’s next blockbuster

Cory Barlog, the mastermind behind the creation, is back at work, and it could either mark a significant change for the God of War series or introduce a new intellectual property.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but marvel at how the God of War franchise transcends mere success to become a cultural milestone. The 2018 reboot by Santa Monica Studio revolutionized action games, storytelling, and pushed the boundaries of what a third-person camera could achieve, making it an unforgettable experience for gamers worldwide.

In just three days, that particular entry managed to sell 3.1 million copies and received a Metacritic score of 94. David Jaffe initially ignited the series with Greek influences, but Cory Barlog infused it with Norse elements. For quite some time now, Barlog has been alluding to additional mythologies in the future: perhaps Egyptian or Mayan. This man seems to have an aversion towards artistic monotony.

Now, the latest update says Barlog’s “next big thing” might not be a new IP at all.

Barlog might be building another god-sized saga

According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, he hinted mysteriously, “Why do people assume Barlog’s game is a completely new project?” Notably, Barlog himself has not explicitly denied this, which could potentially spark discussions across the internet.

As a devoted follower, I’m excited to share that, following Schreier’s insights, our project is progressing smoothly, with the team fully committed. It’s been quite some time since Barlog transitioned from Ragnarok to spearhead this new venture, and it seems we’re deep into its development. However, some job postings hint at a fresh IP, yet Jason’s recent statement, coupled with the lack of substantial news about an original creation, has stirred some uncertainty in me.

If we’re talking about a fresh installment of God of War, that makes perfect sense given how Ragnarok concluded. A new deity has emerged (keeping spoilers at bay), and there are plenty of mythical threads left hanging or cleanly cut with the Leviathan Axe.

However, should it turn out to be something unprecedented, Santa Monica might for the first time in years break free from Kratos’ imposing influence, which has cast a long shadow over the city since the days of Kinetica. This is a period many people can hardly recall.

Eager to learn more, as both Gamescom and The Game Awards of 2025 are approaching, we could potentially uncover the secrets that Barlog has been working on.

Whether it’s gods, aliens, or something in between: just announce it already, man.
