Cory Barlog, the creator, is cooking up something new once more. This could potentially mark another groundbreaking change for God of War, or it might introduce an entirely new intellectual property.
In a more casual and accessible way, we can say that the God of War franchise isn’t just popular; it’s a significant cultural milestone. With the 2018 remake, Santa Monica Studio revolutionized action games, storytelling, and pushed the boundaries of what a third-person camera is capable of.
In just three days, that particular entry managed to sell 3.1 million copies and received a Metacritic score of 94. David Jaffe initially sparked the franchise with Greek influences, but Cory Barlog gave it a Norse spirit. For quite some time now, Barlog has been alluding to exploring additional mythologies, possibly Egyptian or Mayan. He seems to have an aversion towards creative monotony.
Now, the latest update says Barlog’s “next big thing” might not be a new IP at all.
Barlog might be building another god-sized saga
According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, he mysteriously questioned, “Why do people assume Barlog’s game is a brand-new series?” Since Barlog hasn’t explicitly confirmed or denied it, this query could ignite discussions on the internet.
According to Schreier’s report, the project is progressing smoothly and the team is dedicated. It has been several years since Barlog handed over Ragnarok to focus on this new game, leading many to believe it is well into its development phase. However, some job postings hint at a new intellectual property, while Jason’s comments and the lack of official news about anything truly original have raised questions.
As a gamer, I’m all fired up about the latest God of War installment! With Ragnarok setting the stage, it feels like there’s a new deity in Kratos’ realm, and the epic mythology weaves together threads that are just begging to be tied up or neatly trimmed with the Leviathan Axe. Can’t wait to dive back in!
However, should an unexpected development occur, breaking the norm, Santa Monica might emerge from under the long shadow of Kratos for the very first time since the era of Kinetica. (A period many people barely recall.)
We’re eagerly anticipating more information about what Barlog has been developing, as both Gamescom and The Game Awards are approaching in 2025, which could potentially reveal his work.
Whether it’s gods, aliens, or something in between: just announce it already, man.
