Goat Simulator Publisher’s New Roguelike Looks Like An Old-Timey Cartoon Fever Dream

Publisher Coffee Stain, known for games such as Goat Simulator, Valheim, and Satisfactory, has unveiled a fresh roguelike title called “Into the Unwell.” This upcoming game is being crafted by Swedish studio She Was Such A Good Horse, with an aesthetic reminiscent of early 20th-century animation.

Centered on collaborative hack-and-slash dynamics, Into the Unwell emphasizes frenetic gameplay and exaggerated adversaries and settings. What truly stands out about it is its unique art style, reminiscent of “rubber hose” animation seen in cartoons such as Mickey Mouse, Tom and Jerry, and early Looney Tunes. Its visuals also appear to be inspired by the imagery found in animated films like Alice in Wonderland.

Unlike Cuphead with its 2D art style, Into the Unwell sets itself apart by incorporating 3D combat and platforming elements. The trailer suggests that it will offer tough environmental hurdles and challenging boss battles for players to conquer, hinting at a potentially difficult gaming experience.

As stated in a recent announcement, the gameplay is planned to immerse players in a surreal, trippy environment filled with eccentric characters. In other words, Coffee Stain Studios describes it as an imaginative dreamscape where gamers will meet strange, anthropomorphic adversaries, and engage in boss battles that are both peculiar and aggressive.

The game titled “Into the Unwell” is designed for single-player or multiplayer (up to 4 players) cooperatively, and it’s set to release on Steam Early Access soon. This marks the first project from the studio named She Was Such A Good Horse, which consists of seasoned developers hailing from various game development studios across the industry. As of now, there is no information disclosed about its potential availability on platforms other than PC.
