Globoplay Unleashes Chilling Horror Series ‘Reincarnate’ – A Must-Watch Thriller!

Globoplay, the free-to-use streaming platform owned by Brazilian media conglomerate Globo, is venturing into genre productions for the first time with “Reincarnate“. This original horror series from Globoplay will make its initial public appearance at this year’s Berlinale Series Market Selects. As of now, an official release date for the show has not been disclosed.

Titled “Reincarnate,” this nine-episode series introduces Tulio, a man who spent 18 years in prison for killing his partner Caio. Upon his release from prison on his first day of freedom, Tulio contemplates suicide, but is visited by a teenager claiming to be the reborn Caio. The duo then embarks on a mission to uncover the truth behind Caio’s death, bring the real killer to justice, and restore Tulio’s tarnished reputation. Set amidst the Brazilian countryside, the series stars Taís Araujo (“Shades of Sin,” ‘A Mother’s Love’), Julia Dalavia (“Pantanal”), and Grace Passô (“The Day I Met You”).

Bruno Safadi takes charge of the artistic direction for the series, with the script being collectively written by Juan Jullian, Igor Verde, Elísio Lopes Jr, Amanda Jordão, and Flávia Lacerda. In an interview with EbMaster before the Berlinale, these writers highlighted their focus on crafting a genre thriller that remains true to its Brazilian roots.

Verde states, “This collection explores the concept of identity, questioning the basic human inquiry: what defines me? Identity can be a potent deception, and we cling to it so tightly that we often reject alternative identities rather than embracing diversity. This mindset is at the heart of necropolitics, determining who lives and who dies. Therefore, there’s no more suitable starting point than contemplating death.

Jordão emphasizes that the team followed a highly collaborative approach while crafting the series, with everyone contributing to each stage – from writing individual characters to setting the tone and defining the objectives. In essence, they collectively penned all characters and shared equal responsibility for every episode. While it was more demanding, they found this collaborative structure rewarding.

Jordão explains that tales about life’s mysteries strike a chord with many people. He attributes this to our shared experience of being heavily influenced by Brazilian soap operas, or telenovelas, during our upbringing. Although ‘Reincarnate’ wasn’t directly inspired by a specific novela, it was certainly impacted by the rich tradition of Brazilian melodrama.

Other sources for this series are “American Horror Story: Coven,” “Lovecraft Country,” “The Silence of the Lambs,” and the works of Jordan Peele, with “Reincarnate” using familiar themes from the genre like possession and supernatural occurrences, but setting these elements in the Brazilian countryside.

Jullian added, ‘Brazilians have a fondness for horror, yet often find themselves detached from these portrayals. Our productions feature characters grappling with supernatural entities, but they also sing karaoke in seedy bars and deal with personal heartaches. Notably, our cast mirrors the diverse fabric of Brazil, with many actors being Black – a representation that was absent on Brazilian television for quite some time. I view this as an immense triumph to weave a supernatural tale with Black and LGBTQIA protagonists.’

Regarding the honor of being chosen as one of three Brazilian series at this year’s Berlinale Series Market Selects, alongside “Oxygen Masks will (not) drop automatically” and “Suture”, Lopes Jr. emphasizes that events like the Berlinale offer a platform for stories to be seen beyond their countries of origin. He and his creative team hope that through fiction, they can break down barriers and shrink distances, inviting others to learn more about them.

The original series ‘Reincarnate’ is a production of Estúdios Globo, helmed by directors Noa Bressane and Igor Verde. The series is brought to life by producer Isabela Bellenzani.
