Glen Powell Says Arnold Schwarzenegger Gave Him His ‘Full Blessing’ to Star in a ‘Running Man’ Remake

Glen Powell received approval from Arnold Schwarzenegger to play the character Ben Richards in a remake of “The Running Man,” which was originally an action movie from 1987 starring Schwarzenegger. During the unveiling of his new condiment brand, Smash Kitchen, Powell shared that he talked with Schwarzenegger over FaceTime and secured his endorsement to reprise the role.

He mentioned that Arnold had given his approval,” he shared, adding that they had reached out to Schwarzenegger before the remake started shooting. “Patrick Schwarzenegger is a good friend of mine, and I asked Patrick if I could speak with Arnold. Since we filmed The Expendables in Bulgaria, I hadn’t had the chance to see him again,” Powell clarified.

Arnold has graciously given us his approval, and in a few weeks, we’ll be able to present him with a special, movie-related gift he’s sure to enjoy,” Powell continued, expressing his enthusiasm. “I can hardly wait to see him again.

The 1987 movie “The Running Man,” inspired by Stephen King’s novel, featured Arnold Schwarzenegger playing a contestant on a ruthless game show where convicts must evade assassins. This film was expertly guided by director Paul Michael Glaser.

As a dedicated cinephile, I was thrilled to attend Cinemacon earlier this week alongside my fellow cast members Colman Domingo and Josh Brolin for the unveiling of our upcoming film, “Running Man.” The trailer promises a gritty and intense journey, as my character is warned by Domingo’s character, “This game is no game…life and death run wild.” The film seems to be a powerful commentary on modern America, with Domingo’s character exclaiming, “This is America goddammit and we don’t put up with no bullshit.” I can hardly wait for the premiere!

Preparing to unveil the trailer, I shared with Cinemacon audience members that creating “The Running Man” was undeniably the toughest challenge I’ve faced in my life so far. Filming for this movie started in London last September, marking almost 37 years since Arnold Schwarzenegger’s original “The Running Man” graced the silver screen.

Wright’s “The Running Man,” starring Powell, is in theaters November 7.
