Glen Powell has been quite active lately with roles in “Top Gun: Maverick”, Netflix’s “Hit Man”, and Universal’s “Twisters”. He’s continuing this momentum with an upcoming adaptation of a Stephen King novel, titled “The Running Man”. Having had the opportunity to view a sneak peek at Paramount’s 2025 CinemaCon panel, I must admit that my excitement for this project is almost as high as it was for “Twisters” last year. And if his on-set stunts in previous projects were impressive, Powell promises even more thrilling action in his 2025 movie release.
Indeed, it features Michael Cera playfully soaking and shocking individuals with a water gun and electrical current, which is already enticing enough for me to consider a cinema visit. However, in the initial footage I viewed, Glen Powell showed impressive action prowess as well.
At the event, both Edgar Wright and Glen Powell appeared on stage. Notably, Glen shared that he put more effort into this project than he has in any of his past films.
During the filming of The Running Man, I found myself engaged for quite some time and didn’t anticipate it to feel so genuine. I’ve plummeted from buildings, leaped over explosions, and endured my body being battered and bruised. I guess this is the result of taking Tom Cruise’s advice about not using a stunt double. After surviving through various ordeals, some of which were genuinely fiery, I can confidently assert that I have never put in more effort on a film project throughout my career.
It’s not surprising that Glen Powell’s tales about the intense work on “The Running Man” have got me even more excited, given his history of risking himself for roles.
This individual didn’t just step into a Navy aircraft for a casual flight; instead, he prepared for the role in “Top Gun: Maverick,” which reportedly included some turbulent experiences dealing with high G-forces. Contrary to expectations, the movie “Twisters” wasn’t entirely CGI; instead, they utilized plenty of real-life effects on set, even using a jet engine to simulate the chaos of a tornado tossing hay and debris around. In essence, it’s safe to say he’s no stranger to stunts, much like his mentor Tom Cruise.
In conversation, Edgar Wright, the director of “The Running Man”, shared insights into Powell’s tireless dedication during the movie production, revealing how he assumed a significant burden during filming.
Glen was ready to go above and beyond, giving his best effort in every way possible to ensure the success of this movie. It’s hard to picture another individual embodying the protagonist as perfectly as he does. In both a literal and symbolic sense, he immersed himself completely into it.
Eric Eisenberg from TopMob attended CinemaCon where Powell confessed that he needed to achieve a “bulletproof” physique for the film to work effectively. I’m optimistic that it will prove beneficial not just for him, Wright, but also for the entire cast of The Running Man. The movie is set to release this coming winter on November 7th, 2025.
