Over the past few years, Ridley Scott has faced some turbulent times due to the controversial releases of films like Napoleon and House of Gucci. However, last year saw a return to form for the director with the release of Gladiator II, the highly anticipated sequel to his 2000 masterpiece. In this new film, Russell Crowe’s character Maximus Decimus Meridius has moved on, but his son Lucius (played by Paul Mescal) takes center stage as he finds himself in a dangerous political plot in Rome and forced into the Colosseum as a slave. The movie was one of the most eagerly awaited films of 2024, and it did not disappoint when it hit theaters. Now, viewers can enjoy the film at home as it’s now available on streaming platforms, and it continues to receive praise for its strength and honor.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that “Gladiator II” is currently streaming on Paramount+, leading the pack as the most popular movie on the platform this week! However, it’s not just a digital triumph; it’s also been battling it out with some formidable competitors. “The Last Stand of Ellen Cole,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” and “Cop Land” are hot on its heels. Yet, the streaming success of “Gladiator II” mirrors its box office triumph, having grossed a staggering $462 million globally during its initial theatrical run. In an era when the phrase “movie theaters are dying” seems to echo everywhere, a success like this is worth cherishing and saluting!
In addition to Paul Mescal, the film Gladiator II boasts an impressive ensemble of top-tier actors typical of a Ridley Scott production. Denzel Washington stands out in his role as Macrinus, a mysterious politician and slave trader who exerts control over the Roman Senate from behind the scenes. The film also welcomes back Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi, reprising their characters Lucilla and Gracchus from the original movie. Additionally, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and Matt Lucas have joined the cast as fresh faces in the franchise.
Ridley Scott Is Already Working on ‘Gladiator 3’
Typically, a studio keeps quiet about sequel plans until after a movie has premiered. However, Ridley Scott chooses to disregard such conventions. In the lead-up to the premiere of Gladiator II, it was announced that Scott is already working on Gladiator 3. The director didn’t share any specifics about the threequel, but fans are eagerly anticipating a shorter wait for its theater release.
A major hurdle in Scott’s plan is that the director is currently occupied with four other films and occasional TV episodes. His upcoming movie, “The Dog Stars,” was intended to bring back his “Gladiator II” co-star, Paul Mescal. Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, Mescal had to withdraw from the project, with Jacob Elordi taking over the role instead. Alongside Elordi, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Josh Brolin, and Benedict Wong are part of the film’s star-studded cast.
Apart from “The Dog Stars,” I’m gearing up for production on “Wraiths of the Broken Land” – a gritty, action-packed rescue tale. Next up is “Queen & Country,” where I delve into the thrilling escapades of a rogue Spec Ops agent. Then there’s “You Should Be Dancing,” which takes you behind the scenes of the legendary pop group The Bee Gees. Lastly, I’m contributing to an episode of the World War II TV series “Roads to Freedom.” As a movie enthusiast, I can hardly wait to bring these stories to life!
