‘Gladiator 2’ Has the ‘Biggest Action Sequence I’ve Ever Done,’ Says Ridley Scott

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott‘s iconic film “Gladiator” has piqued my interest like never before. Having witnessed the masterful battle scenes in movies such as “Kingdom of Heaven” and “Napoleon,” I can only imagine what Scott has in store for us with his self-proclaimed biggest action sequence yet.

Ridley Scott is known for creating awe-inspiring battle scenes across his movies, like the Battle of Kerak in “Kingdom of Heaven” (2005) and the Battle of Austerlitz in the upcoming “Napoleon” (2023). However, his forthcoming sequel to “Gladiator” promises an action sequence that surpasses any previous work by this renowned director.

In a recent interview with Empire, Scott shared that the opening scene of the film features an action sequence that is amongst the most grandiose I’ve ever directed. Larger in scale than anything seen in “Napoleon.”

In the upcoming “Gladiator 2,” Paul Mescal portrays Lucius, the offspring of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and Commodus’ brother. This sequel takes place several years after the initial “Gladiator” from 2000. As a child, Lucius was sent by his mother to live in Numidia, a northern African territory. However, circumstances force Lucius to return to Rome, now as a gladiator. Here, he encounters new adversaries while reconnecting with his mom.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about “Gladiator 2,” and while Scott didn’t spill all the beans about the opening action sequence, he did tantalize us with a hint: Lucius, played by the talented Mescal, will encounter a formidable foe – a rhinoceros in the Colosseum.

“Computerization and AI — you have to embrace it,” Scott said of building the computer-generated rhino for the scene. “I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino’s body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape.”

He exclaimed, “There’s something I possess that can reach speeds of 40 miles per hour, rotate in place, shake its head, and growl. It’s like riding a massive two-ton rhino! Let me tell you, it’s an incredible amount of fun.”

“Gladiator 2” premieres in theaters Nov. 22.
