‘Gladiator 2’ Cut Gay Kiss, Says Denzel Washington: ‘I Kissed a Guy Full on the Lips and I Guess They Weren’t Ready for That Yet’

As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I must say that Denzel Washington‘s revelation about his on-screen kiss with a man in “Gladiator II” has certainly added another layer to the anticipation for this highly-anticipated sequel. It’s intriguing to see such a bold move in a film genre typically known for its machismo, and it speaks volumes about Washington’s fearlessness as an actor.

In an interview with Gayety, Denzel Washington shared that during the filming of “Gladiator II,” there was a scene where he kissed another man on the lips, but this part was not included in the final version of the much-anticipated sequel that made it to theaters. Denzel portrays Macrinus, a wealthy figure in Rome who owns a group of gladiators for entertainment, in Ridley Scott’s production.

The “Gladiator II” screenplay indicates that Macrinus had previous relationships with males, leading Gaytey to query Washington about the sexual orientation of the Roman Empire, “How queer is the Roman Empire?

Originally, I gave a man a passionate kiss in the movie, but it was removed – I believe they found it too daring at the time. Later on, my character ended his life. This scene is from ‘Gladiator,’ and it’s often referred to as the kiss that sealed his fate.

Washington is earning Oscar buzz in the best supporting actor category for his scene-chewing performance as Macrinus. The role reunites the actor with director Ridley Scott after their work together on 2007’s crime drama “American Gangster,” and it was Scott’s involvement alone that convinced Washington to sign on for the sequel.

Earlier this year, Washington shared with Empire magazine that Ridley Scott has been a source of inspiration for him. They had a fantastic initial collaboration, and they’re working together again now. Scott is full of energy, eager about his upcoming project, and he’s inspiring. At 86 years old, we should all aspire to feel as engaged and enthusiastic as he does.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a pang every time I hear that legendary actor, Washington, is contemplating the end of his extraordinary career. Knowing that each role might be his last, he’s making it a priority to collaborate with visionary directors, ensuring that his remaining performances are nothing short of cinematic masterpieces.

He mentioned that for him, it’s all about the filmmakers. At this stage in his career, he is focused on collaborating with the top-notch ones. He admitted he might not have many films left, so he wants to explore new opportunities,” was said during an interview on Australia’s “Today” program.

The sequel titled “Gladiator II” will be premiering in cinemas on November 22, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. You can catch the entire interview of Washington with Gayety in the video clip provided below.
