This week, Bungie unveiled its live-service sci-fi shooter Marathon, and while it appears to be an engaging addition to the genre, it has been criticized as a resemblance of Sony’s failed live-service game Concord. Although they share similarities – both being live-service games with a lively art direction in the sci-fi genre – one former Concord developer encourages gamers to give Bungie’s creation a try when it releases later this year, and also express empathy for its creators.
In response to discussions across Reddit, YouTube, and Twitch comparing Marathon to Concord 2.0, Stephan Williams, former senior VFX artist at Firewalk Studios, expressed some personal thoughts on the Marathon subreddit (via VG247). Seeing the expressions of the developers during Bungie’s stream filled him with optimism and anticipation for what the future holds for Marathon. He admires their bravery for venturing into unfamiliar territory, attempting something that isn’t proven or guaranteed to thrive. It takes a great deal of courage.
Williams shared that Concord didn’t motivate players, but it did teach valuable lessons from its painful downfall. Now, as a seasoned VFX artist at Digital Extremes, the studio behind Warframe, Williams emphasized the importance of making video games enjoyable and urged everyone to show more empathy towards the developers who labor tirelessly on these games.
Following their major broadcast, Bungie unveiled several facts about Marathon, including its scheduled release date on September 23rd and insights into the battle maps players will use when chasing after loot. The main debate surrounding the game currently revolves around its cost, as while Bungie claims that Marathon won’t be a full-priced title, they are promising a top-notch experience instead. If you’re interested in trying it out, you might get an opportunity to participate in the closed alpha playtest later this month by attempting to secure a key.
In a review by Tamoor Hussain for TopMob, he states that ‘Marathon’ may debut as an engaging multiplayer shooter with great promise but limited content. In the highly competitive market of multiplayer games, this could pose a significant problem.
