As a seasoned veteran of the strategic warfare genre who has spent countless hours commanding my T-Doll units in the original Girls’ Frontline, I can hardly contain my excitement for the release of Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium! With its stunning 3D graphics, turn-based grid combat system reminiscent of XCOM, and a gacha system that promises to introduce fresh characters to the roster, this sequel is shaping up to be an unmissable addition to my gaming library.
It’s been confirmed that the PC version of “Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium” will be released on December 3, 2024, by developer Sunborn. This is a follow-up to the 2016 game, “Girls’ Frontline,” and it was initially launched in China in 2023 and Japan in November 2024. In Japan, Europe, Latin America, North America, most of South and Southeast Asia, Australia, Oceania, and Africa, HAOPlay will handle the publication, while Sunborn and Darkwinter will take care of it in other regions.
Sunborn likewise shared a formal preview trailer for Girls’ Frontline 2, which offers a glimpse of the characters and combat system in action.
Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium Release Trailer
Following directly on from the storyline of Girls’ Frontline, the game Exilium unfolds many years later. The player, once a commander, has since separated from most of the original characters and taken up the role of a bounty hunter in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. However, an unusual assignment unexpectedly brings them back into prominence on the global stage, prompting them to rekindle past relationships with former allies and forge new connections.
In the trailer, you’ll find the latest 3D visual style of Exilium, where all characters are modeled in 3D. Moreover, it includes a 3D weapon customization feature within your control vehicle. Players can also purchase different costumes through an online boutique. Similar to modern free-to-play RPGs like Honkai: Star Rail and Genshin Impact, Exilium will introduce new characters using a gacha system. Interestingly, the original Girls’ Frontline utilized its gacha system for cosmetic items such as outfits and dorm furniture, while most new characters were obtainable through an in-game manufacturing system that required resources.
Apart from battling, players can engage with the characters residing in the dorm too. Unlike its predecessor that mimicked an auto-scrolling strategy game, Exilium has opted for a turn-based grid combat system similar to the XCOM series. Characters from Girls’ Frontline are included in this new version, but they now go by their personal names rather than their weapon names.
In addition, Sunborn unveiled promotional videos featuring characters from the return of GFL, specifically Suomi and a fresh character named Ullrid who wields a sword and bow instead of firearms.
