A limited number of filmmakers have been fortunate enough to direct one of the “Jurassic Park” films, such as Steven Spielberg or Colin Trevorrow. The most recent addition to this exclusive group is Gareth Edwards, who oversaw the production of “Jurassic World Dominion”. Directors can secure roles in various ways, and sometimes it’s through sheer luck or coincidence that they end up on a project. Edwards shares an extraordinary tale about how he became part of the Jurassic team, and surprisingly, it involves his girlfriend, as he shared with TopMob.
Gareth Edwards, known for directing blockbuster movies such as the first installment of the MonsterVerse, 2014’s Godzilla, and the successful Star Wars spinoff Rogue One, didn’t automatically get the job, but he has a deep-rooted fondness for the Jurassic universe. As Hannah Saulic from TopMob learned during their discussion, Edwards drew inspiration from this affection to write a four-page analysis of the original film. In his own words, he aimed to “capture the essence of the story and narrate it as if it was told a thousand years ago.
The director responsible for crafting the project confessed later that the ‘campfire tale’ he shared had been penned a day prior to learning about the job offer. It was subsequently uncovered that his girlfriend, having knowledge of the written piece beforehand, discovered that another Jurassic World film was in production and promptly acted upon it.
The day after, she encountered an article about Universal seeking a director for Jurassic Park. She was chatting with a friend when her phone buzzed, and there, on the screen, was a link to the article. In a way, she copied it and forwarded it to her agent, accompanied by a message: “Is this ridiculous?
On that very day, Gareth Edwards received word from his representative, who shared that Universal Pictures and producer Frank Marshall had expressed interest in him for the director’s role. At first, Edwards’ agent wasn’t keen due to previous statements indicating a desire for a break. Yet, upon learning about the opportunity, Edwards promptly put everything aside to accept the job. This led his representative to reconnect, demonstrating the importance of having a supportive ally in such situations!

Initially, the final edit of Jurassic World: Reborn was intended to last less than two hours. However, studio changes altered this plan.
In simpler terms, taking the job as director after signing on was no walk in the park. His aim, along with his team, was to incorporate top-notch aspects from the series into the film. David Koepp, the franchise writer, went as far as likening this movie to Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film in many ways. The movie titled Rebirth centers around a clandestine team that goes to an island to collect dinosaur blood for medical research. However, their mission takes an unexpected turn when they encounter a vacationing family and harmful dinosaurs.

With an accomplished team, led by Ridley Scott’s collaborator John Mathieson as cinematographer, Gareth Edwards benefited from a skilled cast and crew in bringing this project to life. Their collective efforts resulted in favorable responses from early viewers, making it a dream come true for Edwards who expressed that “this is what I’ve always aspired to achieve.” It was likely his dedication and perseverance that secured the position for him, although his girlfriend certainly played an integral role as well.
