Girl Kidnapped After TikTok Joke About Abduction Sparks Outrage and Concern

A young girl, aged 10, residing in California, found herself in a distressing situation when she jokingly posted about being kidnapped on TikTok. The individual believed to be responsible for this incident has been apprehended and is currently in custody, preparing for an upcoming trial.

27-year-old Matthew Naval was found with a girl and her pet bird at an Elk Grove shopping center on April 13, which is approximately 250 miles away from her home in Kern County.

It is said that in March of 2025, Naval apparently connected with her through Roblox, a virtual gaming environment. After having conversations on Discord for quite a while, they decided to spend time together at a local park at midnight.

When confronted by police officers, the girl admitted that she had misjudged the passage of time while talking with Naval in person, and only later realized he was driving away from her hometown after several hours had elapsed. She explained that she felt unsure about how to broach the topic with him at the moment.

Navally asserted that the girl stated herself to be 18 years old, expressing his intention to aid her in “escaping” from what he perceived as verbal abuse by her parents.

According to the report submitted to the Kern County Superior Court, the man additionally disclosed to the authorities his desire to be in a relationship with another person. Yet, he supposedly confessed that she seemed younger in person, mentioning to a deputy, “I believe it would be advantageous if I remain unaware of her age.

According to his lawyer, Naval is suspected to have mental health problems, possibly including autism; however, a definitive diagnosis is yet to be confirmed.

10-year-old kidnapped after posting “first time getting kidnapped” on TikTok

A day following her posting a video on TikTok depicting herself riding in a vehicle with the caption “First time experiencing kidnapping, haha,” the abduction transpired while she looked out the window.

In her statement to the deputies, she expressed her desire to ensure that Naval does not harm anyone else, in response to being asked about her wishes regarding him.

His lawyer, however, argues that Roblox should share some of the blame for the kidnapping.

He stated, “Roblox and the parents share some accountability in this situation. The consequences of this significant error, which was essentially a major miscommunication, shouldn’t solely rest on Matthew’s shoulders.

In a statement to a local news outlet, Naval admitted that he “should have been more careful.”

“I should’ve been more questioning when it came to having that person involved,” he said.

As I sit here gaming, I can’t help but reflect on the news that my friend Naval is currently incarcerated in a Bakersfield jail. Records from Kern County reveal that he’s being held there on a whopping $1.35 million bail. It’s a stark reminder that even in the virtual worlds we escape to, reality always catches up eventually.

He has been accused of multiple serious crimes and denies all of them. The charges are: one charge for kidnapping, another for kidnapping a child under 14 with the intention of committing indecent acts, there are two separate charges for committing indecent acts against a child under 14, one charge for providing harmful material to a minor, and one charge each for attempting to commit a sexual offense with a minor and for trying to persuade a minor to participate in a sexual act.

Naval’s court date has been set for June 25, 2025.
